the ending was retarded
"Look after my heart, i've left it with you"- Edward Cullen
agreed
shareYes... As much as I liked the rest of the movie, the ending was just weird.
Intelligence and purity.
I definitely agree. I liked the movie, but it ended stupidly. I guess the test audience wanted a happy ending, so they threw together something quick.
shareThe ending was a little lame with the dying thing.
The whole movie is a little hokey IMHO. Stereotypical Irish etc.
It´s a good movie with good acting but there´s not a whole lot of thought put into it. It comes over as a Disney family movie.
Very American.
If it harms none, do what thou wilt.
The worst thing is I waited the entire movie to hear the Enya song. I mean it is was in 60% of movie trailers and promos in the 1990s including far and away.I thought was would it have been at least in some parts of the movie. I hate you Ron Howard!!!!!!
shareThe fake death was stupid.
The movie should have ended with Stephen saying to Joseph, "Let's finish our duel. Man to man," and Joseph says, "Fine. No weapons. Fist to fist."
And then puts his lights out with one punch.

I gotta agree, that ending would have been far better than the ending they went with. Was I the only one who kept thinking, "Will somebody just claim some damn land already?" Watching Joshua and Shannon just sit there talking felt like a pointless waste of time considering everybody saw the "happy ending" a mile off. The thing that bothered me most was that everybody travelled so far for a prime piece of land and yet nobody claimed it until about 10 minutes after being there.
shareI thought the ending was spot-on.
shareSee, Stephen didn't KNOW Joseph had hit it big in Boston as a bare-knuckle prizefighter. He probably thought Joseph was still the dull-witted farm boy who made a fool of himself in the duel back in Ireland. Plus Stephen was bigger and taller, longer reach, etc etc., so he probably thought Joseph would be easy pickings in a fight.
So it would have been perfectly in keeping with Stephen as the "arrogant bastard" thinking he would clean up on Joseph without hardly breaking a sweat. It would have made perfect sense for him to say, "OK, fine, fist to fist," only to get cold-cocked by Joseph with about one punch.

That would have been a cool ending - Joseph cleaning Chase's clock. But the "died twice" thing was referencing back to his Da so... but I would have rather they removed the Da's "comeback" so they could've gone with your ending.
shareAgreed. Retarded. But the film had gone on long enough, and they had to end it somehow.
shareIt seems no one is getting that the end is mirroring his dad's death.
His father promises to look over him from Heaven, then he dies and the camera goes upwards, as he rises to heaven (presumably).
Same thing happens with Joseph, except that his dad is there to help him and gives him a second chance.
You may find it stupid perhaps but it's not "random", it's planned that way from the very beginning.
I too dislike typical hollywood happy endings- at least when it feels like they have changed the ending to, like someone said earlier, make the test audiences happy. But with this film, it would have been really odd to have him die for real. This isnt a serious, historical drama piece- most of the film has comedic parts in it, especially with their interactions with one another. To have it end on a depressing note would have jarred more than the ending we have. It is a silly way to do it- 'oh, he's alive again,' but, like I say, this was really never a serious, high brow film.
Actually, thinking about it, for me, the whole feeling of the film reminds me a little bit of the Princess Bride...especially, specific example, that he comes alive again for 'true love.' Yes, it's set in the real world, but it's all about their dream, and so definitely does have fairytale aspects to it.

Agreed, I think the ending fit the movie perfectly to a T. Heck they coulda even gone more hammy and sappy and shown them 5 years later, married and working the land and I would've been happier...
shareI thought the way Joseph "won" was perfect. He won in the way that would be the most painful to Stephen. He had better heart and character.
I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
If you mean the way he simply stood there with his unplanted flag like an imbecile as a weak method to force the final fight to happen, I agree.
...then whoa, differences...
