Irish history dramas

The time has come.

I've been looking but haven't found much on Irish historical dramatic films, except for the history of the last century.

Irish filmmakers and story tellers should make some historic films and tv dramas so the rest of the world can understand what the heck went on, prior to 1900 etc...

Irish history, by the Irish.

Ireland has some wonderful films of "in the moment" character stories, but they seem somehow disconnected with their history, whereas perhaps only the Irish can understand its historic context.

From the outside looking in, I'd have to guess that Ireland wants to forget its history, or they're just afraid to offend the British, or afraid it will stir up trouble, or, which is probably the case, they never had enough funding to make a realistic, honest Irish history drama. (Costumes, and historic sets cost a lot)

Art shouldn't be afraid to be honest.

Everyone outside of Ireland tells their own Irish (his)stories, but only peripherally. Usually with a British or American POV.

Like this example, the American film Far and Away. The story shows only a tiny backdrop of historical context for emigration to the USA and a love story.

You've got HBO there filming Game of Thrones. They like edgy topics, and they have the production money. Also, you have the "Vikings" being filmed in Ireland. They have people there. Get your story tellers and filmmakers to talk to the right people about producing a dramatic historical series dealing with Ireland's history. They won't be there forever. That's how it's done. Somebody has to go around to solicit funding from people who back films by selling them a good story. It's a dirty job, but that's how it's been done outside of the UK.

There's been quite a few films about Ireland's more recent history circa 100 years or so.

Turn the clock back another 4-500 years.

The world viewership is more than ready for this kind of historic series..

I'd like to see films or a series that go back, featuring(farther back if anyone wants to) Cromwell and the "Adventurers" in Ireland, the Land Grabs, the penal laws, transportation of the 16th century rebels to the West Indies and so forth. It's so outrageous, I can't believe there's been only one mini series The Hanging Gale that ever dealt with the subject of the Great Hunger.

I don't think one feature film would be enough, which is why a dramatic series about Ireland's history would have much more context and impact. (And maybe be good for the economy)

Hell, there's been plenty movies and mini series about the British Colonialism in India. Why not Ireland?

Are you ready?

I am.

It's a very good time for well written, well produced historic dramatic series.

Irish screenwriters, start working on a good script.
