the early 90's...did we ALL talk that way?

i remember "dude", "dope", "chillin'" personally....are there any ppl here that used the jargon? just curious....

reply

I think kids today talk even worse. What am I saying? Kids today don't even talk, they text. Even if their friends are a few feet away from them.

Maybe it depends on where you live? I grew up in Southern Cali and everyone used the words "dude", "dope" and "chillin" or "chill" in high school. (Graduated in 2003) Im now 24 and I hate to admit I still use dude and chill with close friends...

It's funny, having been released in '92 and possibly filmed a year or two before that like many movies, it was this close to BEING an 80s movie lol. It's so weird to think that I was 12 and in 6th grade when it was in theatres and that Sean Astin was like 21 or close.. Now i'm nearly 8 months from turning 30 and he's going to be 39 in a week or two. Long ago are the Goonie days, that's for sure.

I went to a highschool in Maine and graduated in '99. We used "Dude" and "whatever" and "chaaa, riiiiight" quite a bit. Some of the hicks kind of made up their own slang though.."Don't bout 'Magin" meaning pretty much "as if, whatever". It was interesting.

^Even though this counts as a 90's movie, there are still alot of 80's holdovers in it. I mean, look at how Stoney dressed at the beginning. He had fishnet tops and turqouis and pink striped pants.

I was an elementary schooler in the Mid 90's and we used all of these slang words. Usually the absurd slang words people use hang around with the younger crowd a little while longer than that of high schoolers.

you graduated in '03 and are 24...that would put you at around 15 upon graduation...so here i am 2 years past this post to ask you...whats the deal BRAH?

reply

Haha BRAH...You answered your own question... I posted that in January 2010. I turned 25 in April. 2010-2003= 7 years. 25-7= 18 years old when I graduated in June of 2003 :-)

We used dude, chill, coolage a lot in the 90's and I'm English, so I think it was pretty much universal in English speaking countries, not just the USA.

I still use dude A LOT!

So dude, just chill! lol

I'm immediately reminded of the special zone in Mario World where the levels are all titled after 80s/90s surfer slang(Gnarly, Tubular, Way Cool, Awesome, Groovy, Mondo, Outrageous, and Funky)

reply

I was about 17 when this movie came out, and I'm 35 now. I still talk like I did back then for the most part. What's even worse ... I have nieces who admire and look up to me because I grew up during that era. I am constantly badgered, interviewed and the subject of attention about living as a young adult in the 90's whenever the family gets together. They're obsessed with anything to do with the 90's. I keep assuring them they didn't miss out on much.

It seems like anyone that would be in this thread here are people that are in their 30-40s or more and it seems like you think the word "dude" and "chill" are extinct and old lol.

Im 20 and EVERYONE uses those words, but im part and have been part of the stoner groups for the past 4 years and 'chill' has always been there, may it be a normal or stoner word, but 'dude' is used by everyone. People use 'word' 'man' 'yo' whats good' 'hit me up' , stuff like that. its basically all the same as I guess you all are talking about, some words have changed but they still mean the same... its like words that have these slang terms get dropped and made up every generation, but they dont ever go to new words.. its just the same type of words they apply to.

A lot of these slang words were around WAY before the 90s. These slang words didn't just appear one day in 1990. I know they were definitely around in the 80s, but I'm willing to bet "dude" was around way before the 80s. "Chill" and "Chill out" may have been an 80s invention, not sure, but I remember it feeling new as a young kid in the 80s.

"Chill, Chillin, Chill Out" were all definatley in the 80s and carried over to present day. "What-EV-eer" was absolutely around in the 80s. This was all 80s valley girl speak. Some 80s slang like "totally radical!" had a short shelf life and died out with the 80s, others carried into the 90s and beyond. Something like "Dude" was probably around in the 1950s.

The real 90s invented slang words are probably "As if" and "NOT!" Those seemed to start around the early 90s with the Wayne's World movies. Then ofcourse there was "That's da bomb!", which is completely 90s.

But a lot of these slang words that were considered very hip in the 80s and 90s have become common usage in mainstream society. When I watch a sports game the announcers will comment on the celebrity guests in attendance and say something like "Look, Beyoncé is on the house"....but back in the 90s saying "in the house" was considered something only kids of hip hop background said. Now it's just a common expression.

I will definatley agree with the sentiment that Pauly Shore's vocabulary was NOT at all reflective of how normal people or most kids talked in 1992. That guy seemed like he was forever stuck in 1970s-80s surfer culture.
