What Did Kate See in Doug that made her fall for him?

What did Kate see in Doug that made her fall for him and what did Doug see in Kate that made him fall in love with her? It could'nt be their good looks or personalities alone. What could it be?

reply

Ummm ... not sure, but I think they fell in love because it was in the script.

I never could accept that these two could be compatible in a romantic relationship. They're too different in background, interests (except skating) and temperament. They're also both too stubborn and would fight too much for it to work out in the long run. It was only their mutual goal (success in competition) that drew them together; once that goal was achieved and they retired from skating, they'd have nothing left and the relationship would gradually (or not so gradually) fall apart.

Sorry to burst anyone's balloon, but that's my two cents.

Ha ha, don't worry, I agree with you! For reality, that is.

When this movie first came out I saw it during it's original run with my mom and sister (yes, I'm old, ha ha) and while we all liked it, the first thing I said was "I didn't buy them falling in love!" It didn't really work for me even that first time around.

Still, it makes for a cute story, anyway.

It took a lot of effort (emotionally and physically) from both actors to make this movie work. It may be fictional between the two characters, but in real life, it brought a lasting friendship between DB and Moira to this day!

One thing I wanted to add. In an interview DB was asked "You've had so many poignant roles, is there any one that you hold nearest and dearest?" His response was The Cutting Edge.

DB: "I'm really proud of The Cutting Edge because I know how hard it is to make romantic comedies work. There are a lot of really good actors who have gone down in flames trying to create what somebody once described as bubbles on champagne, something you can't put your finger on if it's not there.

In fact The Cutting Edge was Moira's debut and big gig. Three months, everyday before filming, they became real close. They had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun. Moira said "the scene that hit me the most is near the end when Doug comes up to her (Kate) and said, I need you. Emotionally we were both so right on in that moment and it was so real. And what we were feeling was real, that when I even think about it I get goosebumps and every time I see it I kind of well up because I believe it, I played it, I knew I was acting, but now when I see it, he (Doug) really needs her. But there is something about that moment became magical for me." She stated that The Cutting Edge was the movie where people remember her the most after all these years.

i am not too sure of dougs falling for kate beyond she is cute as a button lol

but i can say that looking at it through kates eyes, what she confessed at the dinner table when doug, kate, dad, and pamchenko were arguing about a button blah blah blah...

paraphrasing "you came and you skated, this must have been hell for you"

there was genuine respect for him, to meet her at her level. to sacrifice at her level. to meet the challenges that in her little world, she probably felt only she was capable of. that mutual respect probably would open her soul to the possibility that there was an equal out there to her, and potentially on more than one level. that probably was the first step to her doom lol

remember when she stated that she had 'laundry that could skate better' than that one guy. she threw everyting at doug and yet he continued to perservere

for every single person, that spark is different.

if it wasn't for my horse, i wouldn't have spent that year in college

Ever heard of Pride & Prejudice? It's considered the most romantic novel & it's about 2 people who couldn't be more alike. Another, is North & South, you can also watch the BBC miniseries.

The notion is based on 'opposites attract' & believe me, it happens. But people are under the illusion that people of different temperaments, different social background or views in life are completely & utterly different, obviously there is something that the one fins in another that drew them together. My parents are like the couple in this movie, except my Dad is the Moira character & my mom is the Doug character, they've been together for 35 years now. So the concept of 'opposite attraction' does happen & appeals to many people. It also is more practical & logical coupling because it encourages growth, change & evolution of character as partner's learn, adapt or apply the unique character of the other.

"Opposites attract" is a saying for a reason -- it's true! My wife and I, for instance, are total opposites. I don't find Doug & Kate's romance unbelievable at all.

I disagree with some of the posters that these two would never be compatible in real life. I think what Kate saw in Doug was someone that didn't kiss her a$$. Everyone always bowed down to her and treated her like a spoiled brat (her father, Hale, even Anton). But Doug didn't take it from her and despite how she treated him, he stayed with her and kept pressing forward. That, I think, created an admiration that Kate had for him. The biggest thing is that he accepted her and loved her for herself and the way she really was. She says in one scene that she wishes that "win or lose she could just be a daughter," because her father kept pushing her to be something that in many ways she didn't want, which is why she keeps sabotaging it (ex. with Brian at the Olympics). At the end when Doug tells her he loves her and needs her, she finally wants to win because she wants him and she loves him. And so she puts the Pamchenko back in because deep down she always knew she could do the move and that she could be as great a skater as people keep pushing her to be. Now, she has the drive to want it and succeed. In a way she does it for Doug, because he wants it and he needs her, but she also does it for herself. You can see when you watch it, that for the first time she really allows herself to enjoy skating and to have that passion (she never let herself be completely vulnerable as a person or even to the sport until that moment) because she loves Doug and that last skate is really the culmination of all of their feelings coming together and allowing themselves to be vulnerable to each other.

SexyLexy5822 ,

I agree to you 100%.That's,what I think,too!

SexyLexy5822 - I definitely agree with you. I think you "hit the nail on the head" with your explanation!

Easy.
His competitiveness and work ethic that matched her own and a wanting that exceeded it.

I don't know what is wrong with the world - but I know how to fix it.

reply

^^^^ This! I've seen this movie many times since I was a kid, and agree with you.

I think when Anton tells her in the hospital that she is afraid because she has finally found herself a partner pretty much says it all. She finally found someone who was just as stubborn and determined as she was, but he also didn't take her nonsense and stood up to her, something that no one else had done before. He also needed her in a way no one had before. And she needed him. To me, it totally made sense that they would fall in love.

reply

Well, it's Taming of the Shrew, right? So a big part of it is that he "tames" her - he stands up to her, and doesn't put up with her crap. He's a strong masculine guy; I don't have any trouble seeing how anyone could fall in love with him ;-) She becomes really attractive when she finally admits she has problems and then apologizes to him. Both are good-looking. They share a passion for skating, and they're both very competitive, so they have a huge thing in common. Add to that that they're both very strong people, so they know they can count on each other. To me it seems perfectly reasonable that they would fall in love.

reply

Exactly. Not to mention, they spent about 12 hours a day together every single day. When you spend that kind of time together, doing something so physically and mentally exhausting, where you have to lean on each other for support, you develop a pretty strong bond. There's a reason why so many pairs skaters are married to their partners.

FINALLY, someone makes the connection! I'm with you on this btw!

So many great people on this board! Awesome!

For years Kate was used by her father to fulfill the dreams of the mother.

She was rich, wanted for nothing, and had no purpose.

At the end when Doug says "I need you", she's drawn to him because she's not being used, but needed.

He was a washed up hockey player with no future, no purpose.

She gave him that purpose, she saved him.

And he saved her.

reply

Way to sing it Sexy Lexy and I couldn't agree more. I buy them as a couple, pretty easy in fact. To be in a relationship that works you don't have to be a 100% clone of the person you're with. Viva le difference!

My Sig: Nothing Here.

reply

Yeah, it's the same with me. This is a very very easy coupling for me to believe, they seem to fit really well together (characters & temperaments). I don't believe in couples who are alike who get together, not only is it boring, but there's no room to grow. I actually find that more unbelievable than this pairing.

While I'm also in agreement with the general opinions here, I just thought I'd throw in that things like 'making sense', 'logical' and 'practical' aren't really terms you can apply to love.

If love made absolute sense, then we'd all be happy, because we'd all know exactly how to find it... though that might kill some of the magic love brings.

reply

Well, Filipinos as many other nations are quite practical in their 'love'. So I would apply it.

Love does make sense, there is a science behind it, there are many postulates & theories about this chemical reaction in the body. But also, scientists believe it was a sign of sexual selection, an evolution.

Love doesn't come from the hart, it comes from the brain.

reply

They were perfect chemistry!

My guess? Kate likes Doug because he's as stubborn as she is?

They're both supposed to be these former crème de la crème athletes that have hit a downturn. Doug, like Kate, is a fierce competitor. Kate never gives him what he wants. He's never bored, perhaps? And, for Kate, Doug is thoroughly persistent. Unlike Kate's other former partners, Doug can put up with her. Not only that, he doesn't give Kate what she wants. They're from different worlds, but they're somewhat alike. They have far different personalities but they're both driven by their need to win. That likely explains it.
