How many people....

How many of you guys claiming it was completely obvious that Dil was a man.....have seen Ace Ventura? I wish I could have seen this movie before I ever saw Ace Ventura and before the last 20 years, when transexuals have come to the forefront.

I just hate it when people watch a movie long after it was made and get angry that it wasn't as good as it was advertised, or weren't surprised by a twist. You really have to transport yourself in time when watching a film to fully appreciate it and I feel like the majority of movie watchers just don't have the ability to do that. I guess people just get jaded, or maybe subconsciously know more about a movie than they believe when going into a viewing.

Did Dil have mannish features and a slightly deeper voice? Of course. Dil is a man and is played by a man. But I don't believe the point of the movie is to fool you. Like I read on here, there are intentional clues leading up to the big scene that were far more likely to go unnoticed in 1993 than in 2003 or even more so, 2013. "She's not your type", "There's something you should know about Dil", the makeout scene, etc. They're all there for the viewer to pick up on. And if you did, congratulations. But just because you catch a "twist", it shouldn't diminish the quality of the picture. You have to take the perspectives into account. This is Fergus' movie. He's the one who "got fooled" and whether or not that is believable is what matters.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing people say "Aha! I saw that coming so that movie isn't good" for any movie, not just this one. Nobody is going to give you a medal. I just think people like that have no clue how to view a movie. People want to solve the ending and be right and then trash the film instead of being engrossed by the events unfolding and the story that is being construed. Maybe its just me. I guess I just find myself liking movies more because my thought process isn't about trying to beat the director to the finish but to listen to the message they are giving me.

Well written - the film is MORE than the twist

I think the nearest comparison is M Butterfly which only has a few clues that the woman the man falls for is a man...In that film we have a similar sex scene (implied oral sex) and a few other clues - the film title is a subtle one...the lead character is supposed to be French and they use M as a shortening of Monseiur implying Buttefly is male...another clue is when the man/woman is talking with another she says something about Chinese opera something like "Do you know why the opera has men playing female parts? Because only a man knows how a woman should behave"
