Why Dill thought Fergus was Scottish? I can see an American or other foreigner mistaking an Irish accent for a Scottish one, but not anyone from the British Isles. Was Dill that ignorant? Never watched tv?

A lot of other Brits really are that ignorant, especially the younger ones who haven't travelled much.
