Why don`t Stephen Rea received an Oscar in1993?

WINNER
Scent of a Woman: Al Pacino
NOMINEES
Chaplin: Robert Downey Jr.
------------------------------
Unforgiven: Clint Eastwood
------------------------------
The Crying Game: Stephen Rea
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
Malcolm X: Denzel Washington

The Crying Game: Stephen Rea

I take it for granted that he should be received The Best Actor in a Leading Role of Oscar.

I can't understand it at all.

Denzel Washington should have won

haha,
There is some truth in it.

Go for wool and come home shorn.

Yeah I would have given it to Denzel, with Stephen Rea second.

Pacino had lost Best Actor so many times I think the Academy gave him an Oscar for "Scent of a Woman" as sort of a lifetime achievement award. Too bad as I think his performance is hammy and way over the top.

Then again . . .

I just watched "Scent of a Woman" again, hadn't seen it for several years. Gotta admit I liked Pacino's performance more than before. I honestly think now that I'm older I saw his performance in a different light and can better appreciate his character. It was quite a revelation.

So now I'm ok with Al's Oscar win.

Hey, women don't have a monopoly on changing their minds.

Well Rea's performance was good, but I think that Eastwood's performance was probably the best of that year's films. Only Harvey Keitel, in either Bad Lieutenant or Reservoir Dogs was on the same sort of level dramatically - but he wasn't nominated. Pacino was long overdue a win(he should have got it either for Godfather Part II or Dog Day Afternoon), so he got it for 'Scent of a Woman'. Not a bad performance, but he has done better - and like I said not the year's best male performance.

I remember that year. Pacino was going to get that Oscar no matter what. The movie could of been Plan Nine From Outer Space Part 2 and he would of won it. He had been one of the top actors in the business for years and never received one. It was the we own you a Oscar, Oscar. Scorsese got one a couple of years ago. And Paul Newman got one for The Color of Money. The ones they give out so the movie industry feels better about themselves for not giving one to them when they deserved one. Pacino had made a really bad movie called Cruising which hurt his career for a while. No matter what you want to think Scarface when it first came out was not that greatly received and his performance was way over the top. I remember people laughing during the movie. So when he came back it was a slow one. So by 1992, Hoffman, DiNiro had gotten theirs so it was Pacino's year.

IMO Robert Downey was robbed, but I knew he did not have a chance. Rea came in second IMO. Robert Downey will never have another great performance like Chaplin and like John Travolta who I think the same about in his role in Saturday Night Fever. Most people will never have performances like that. And they both were robbed. I think my favorite Rae role was Citizen X. Heartbreaking. But that was a tv movie.

What?

Pacino should have won the Oscar that year but for his supporting role in GlenGarry Glen Ross for which he was also nominatd.

Denzel should have won best actor.
