Found out what happened to David Arnott (Criss Cross himself)

This guy got so many kudos on his performance, then never made another movie. In googling around, I found this, posted in late 2008

My brother made only this one movie. He was offered several other parts following the filming of this but said that he found the experience too emotionally draining. His life since has been a struggle as often happens to young teenagers who find themselves with a windfall of money. He now resides in Oregon and is still trying to find himself and his place in this world. Thank you for your interest. The filming of the movie in Key West was one of the most memorable experiences in our lives.

I heard that the filmmakers were dissatisfied with him and I could never understand why. His performance was understated and he mumbled his dialogue -- exactly in character. Was his emotional draining due to his interactions on the set? If so it's a real shame because I'm sure he could have given more fine performances and perhaps with a more congenial group. Or have I simply been misinformed?

Very interesting young actor - something very natural, authentic about him. Pity actors like him and Kelly Reno walked away from the movies and we've been left with over-ripe, smart-assed miniature adults parading as teens nowadays.

Ohh, now I get it. He's just ACTING like he can't act? So the monotone delivery as if he has a reading disability is part of the character? Now it all makes sense -- and here I just thought he was a terrible actor.

Too bad they didn't find Brad Renfro for this one, it might have worked.

The Kid was so natural in this flick, it doesn't matter how he pulled it off.
The kid was great...and the movie is a classic. I don't care that the kid made only one movie. The one he did make was a real piece of So. Florida life from the late 60s, and I watch it every time it's on TV. One day I'll buy the DVD. This kid could have been another River Phoenix. Both in success, and later into drugs.
Perhaps he made a great decision to get out of tinsel town when he did. Good for him.

I surmise your post is of a sarcastic nature. But it is quite possible David Arnott was cast in "CrissCross" just because of his naturalness, that he both appeared and behaved more as an authentic young male teenager than one hired from among a typical Hollywood cattle call and/or child modeling agencies.

In any case, by perusing the IMDB.com posts about both Arnott and the film, it seems the consensus is the kid made a distinct and lasting impression upon those who saw the film, even now all these years since the initial release.

If you haven't yet seen it, I also recommend "Streetwise," a documentary with actual street kids. You may see, by comparison with those kids in that film Arnott is the real deal, as opposed to just some Method-derived, post-Brat Packer.

He was smart.

He realized acting wasn't his calling and did something else.

Lucas, I am wondering how to get in touch with your brother. I would like to ask him some questions about his role in this movie.
