Ellen vs Damita

Which of the female lead characters was your favorite? I like both characters, but I think I can relate more to Ellen. She was intelligent, educated, classy and sophisticated. But part of me likes Damita better because she was sassy, street smart and tough and didn't put up with nobody's bullsh!t, all while maintaining her femininity. I don't know, I'm torn. I think I'm a combination of both characters.

Both are great.

This is my one problem with the movie. It's bad enough that Kid (light skin) was the innocent, smart guy and Play (dark skin) was the tough, street hood-- but the casting people did the same thing with the women as well.

"T.J." dont consider himself no pimp, more like a male madame....that wasnt too well throughtout"

Ok would that be Blades mom? or Duncans? anyways my pick is Detittie...I..I mean Demita.

Karyn Parsons(Ellen) is very beautiful to me...I thought she was very sexy in Major Payne and is a very well rounded actress. She can play a ditzy stuck up(Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and a serious no-nonsense intelligent woman to be attracted to(Major Payne)...That other thang makes me cringe every time I watch this movie. Makes me even more sick to my stomach watching her poor acting skills in Boyz N The Hood. Just watch the whole scene with her when Ricky gets shot...FAKE!

I read through this thread and liked RockytheBear statement that they basically cast the characters via looks. Such as Blade and Damita both being on the bad side of the tracks and they cast two dark skinned actors. Same with Ellen being a bookworm like Duncan and both being light skinned.

Another thing ~ and perhaps they didn't mean to cast them as such but Ellen is sort of a version of Sydney (House Party series) and Damita is that of Sharane (HP 1).

Late to this party Lisa and Rock, but I made a similar point about HP years ago. It didn't dawn on me the same thing jumped off in CA. Shame. They should be more conscious about these subliminal, or outright blatant stereotypes. One time could be considered incidental, but this appears to be a pattern.

reply

oh, they are conscious of it, alright. but working is important in hollywood as well.

I posted this years ago, I can't believe it's still up. Yall took this thread in a whole different direction. It wasn't meant to be a light skin vs dark skin thread, I was just comparing the characters, that's all. Anyway, I'm watching it now and still like both characters equally so I'm still undecided lol.

Well, you didnt want it to go there, but that is relevant to the discussion. The darker skinned woman can only be seen in a sexual way; she shows off her boobs, wears tight form fitting clothes and is just sexy, all the way up to the final scene, which isn't subtle at all. The light skin girl is sexy but it's more because of her mind. All this goes back to slavery and if you are one of those types who doesn't know that many black people, you'd think this is reality, but it isn't. Dark skin girls in House Party and Class Act and every modern day rap video (Bria Myles is a good example, love her though, and I told her via Twitter, and she did respond) are updated versions of the Hottentot Venus (google that) and the light skin girls are modern day mulattas (google that) trying to fit in with their peers, in all the advanced classes while the cool kids struggle in Special Ed (a big part of Class Act) Like the other lady said, they know what they are doing. Banking on stereotypes is a sure thing.
