Why did they change the Red Skull's nationality ?

Hollywood was still doing WW2 movies in the 80s/90s. I know its not politically correct now to mention/show nazis/nazi symbols in movies.

Why not? In the past 20 or so years: American History X, Saving Private Ryan, Fury,Valkyrie,Inglorious Basterds, Schindlers List,The Bunker, Conspiracy,etc. I don't think "political correctness"(I hate that term, lol)has anything to do with it. If it's going to turn a profit them studios will make it.
