Max C.

Max, is this the week that you actually get luckier than the rest of us and watch Civil War? If so, can you did what you did last year and make a non spoiler review about it here please?

Max, sorry to put you on the spot but I know you enjoyed BvS. Compare the two, which one did you like better and what reason did you like one better than the other?

reply

I'd say they're evenly matched, but Civil War "wins" on account of having characters I'm actually invested in.

reply

Well, you "win" because you enjoyed two comic book movies greatly!

Ok, so here goes (no spoilers):

Loved it. A thrilling ride with an evenly balanced mix of humor, drama and spectacle. The stakes are very real and personal, and the movie does a brilliant job of addressing what's been going on in the MCU since 2008. Proof, if any were needed, that Marvel is willing to take risks.

What I loved:

- It's a Captain America movie. Stark is a major supporting character, the other Avengers - Falcon excluded - are mainly guest stars. They're all used brilliantly, but at its core this is Cap and Bucky's story.

- There's no overt foreshadowing in terms of what's coming, at least not in the film itself. The mid-credits scene does mainly resolve a plot point, but it also hints at one of the upcoming movies. The post-credits scene - if there is one - was not included.

- Anyone who complained about Stark seemingly "unretiring" in Age of Ultron should get a satisfactory answer in this film.

- The supposed lack of acknowledgement of what's going on in the TV shows is not an issue: it's made perfectly clear that the Sokovia Accords will affect only the Avengers (as stated on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the President has appointed a specific task force to deal with the Inhumans).

- Spider-Man and Black Panther did not disappoint. And Ant-Man was used perfectly (unsurprisingly, the funniest lines are not spoken by RDJ in this one).

- The conflict between Stark and Rogers does not just build on what happened in the first two Avengers movies, but also on stuff we've seen in their solo films.

Minor complaints:

- Zemo was a bit underused, but his role in the story is quite good nonetheless. Same for Everett Ross, but of course, we will be seeing both of them again.

- There's a small timeline error early in the film, but non-nerds are unlikely to notice it.

Is it May 5th yet? 😭

How was Bruhl's performance as Zemo? I understand the role is very minimal but i really like him as an actor.

Brühl was good. If Zemo does get a larger role in future films, we're in for a treat.

As someone who keeps track of timeline stuff, you now have me curious now as to what the error is.

But I can wait until I see it to find out 

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

Best MCU film?

Urich: Guess I have more faith in humanity. Fisk: So did Christ, if I recall.

reply

I still think The Avengers is #1, but Civil War is a solid #2.

reply

Was the credits scene satisfying?

Is the ending really powerful?

Does the MCU change in a big way going forward?

reply

Like I said, the post-credits scene was missing (I'm assuming there will be one). The mid-credits scene was very good.

The ending was powerful, and yes, the MCU does change (although I'm guessing most of the Phase 3 movies won't deal with the consequences in an overt way, for obvious reasons).

It all sounds good.

My biggest worry about the film and my ability to enjoy it has always stemmed from the fact that I just did not like the Civil War story arc from the comics.

I know they aren't directly following that story, more loosely adapting it to fit the MCU and it's history... but the trepidation has still been then even though I'm absurdly excited for the film and can't wait for May 6th to roll around.

Good Stan cameo?

Oh, yeah. Arguably his funniest in the Cap movies.

How was the score? Similar to Winter Soldier?

The Winter Soldier score is a masterpiece
