I think making the MCU light, and then going to dark...

Was the best course of action. No one can deny, these films are getting darker.

It shows how these movies evolve. Look, marvel films are not 'kiddie', but no one can deny they have gotten more mature over time. A lot more mature.

With the DCU, you basically can go from...dark tone to darker tone? I just feel like there has been a steady trend of every marvel movie getting a little bit darker, and dealing with darker themes. I don't count guardians in this, because that is supposed to be a comedy movie.

Anyone else love this gradual tone change from light to dark? The more mature aspects coming out the later the series goes? I think it's freaking brilliant and honestly, making it darker is the natural progression for the MCU.

And then there is Ant-man, the last MCU film many of us have seen. Thats not dark at all. I like that the MCU produces all kinds of tones and genres.

It's interesting, because even though the films are set in the universe, they are totally different genres in many ways, although all are action films to some extent.

I think changing it up is essential otherwise it really would get boring. When characters cross over into other films, it's almost like you are seeing the reality of the universe through a different lense. It's the same character, but they are also different. You really notice this with Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Vision and Black Widow as they cross over from Age of Ultron to Civil War. Tony was incredibly different too. The closest to this version was the Tony in Iron Man 3.

I disagree that it's trending darker. Here's my take on the releases in the context of their tone light/dark.

The spectrum:

DARK
Captain America: Winter Soldier
Iron Man
Thor
The Incredible Hulk
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Captain America: The First Avenger
Iron Man 3
Iron Man 2
Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy
Thor: The Dark World
Ant-Man
LIGHT

I agree mostly, but why do you have the two Thor films so far apart? Of all of the films in the MCU, those two are the most similar to each other.

Kat Dennings, and stuff like Thor hanging Mjolnir on the coat rack, Thor on the Tube, etc. versus more Shakespearean vibe of the first Thor, more drama with Loki/Odin.

I understand Frigga's death was dark - that movie was all over the place.
