This must have gotten some release in the U.S. in 1992 or later because

I remember seeing in downtown Boston, one of those plywood walls they put around construction sites, was covered in a huge grid of identical posters for a Captain America movie. The poster was mostly just a picture of the shield and the words Captain America. This was after the first Batman but way before the huge glut of comic book movies, so I remember this display had me thinking "this looks like the next big summer blockbuster." and then, nothing. No reviews, no buzz, no merchandise, and later, I remember being told at Blockbuster that they'd never heard of it! When the reboot came out in 2011, I thought, "what about that 'phantom' version I saw the poster for so many years ago?"

This film was originally intended for a theatrical release. I think the production company was running out of money, and according to the director they didn't get to complete the film they intended, they just sort of "stitched it together" and by that point someone decided on a direct-to-video release. I don't think the film is that bad all things considered.

The director apparently sells an "extended version" on his website, but I've never seen it. I'm more than happy with my Shout! Blu-Ray.

Would it surprise you if I said it's not the worst Captain America movie?

No, I've heard there were earlier ones. It would surprise me if you said it was superior to the ones starring Chris Evans.

Well of course it isn't. But I still enjoy it.
