Birthday party (SPOILERS)

After Ben suddenly shoots the guy at his birthday party, everyone is kinda stunned, but then eventually the party continues as if nothing happened, with that woman handing him another gift. Can someone explain this? They didn't know he was a killer, right?

reply

I'm pretty sure they knew.

They knew, as he explained earlier how he took care of the developer that was mean to Jenny, to Jenny. She laughed. His girlfriend said, "Well, it is a living..." at one point

reply

I guess they were taken back and just acted normal to avoid Ben going off.

I posted this to another thread where some guy felt Man Bites Dog wasn't really a comedy. I think it deserves to be in this thread, too:

More a dark horror drama that doesn't take it too seriously.

There was one dark scene where the other character's reactions were teetering on humorous (to me).

In that dinner/birthday scene where he's wearing the neck brace and he gets the gift of a holster, asks for a gun, then brandishes it around then promptly shockingly suddenly shoots the balding guy in the head. Pardon me for not knowing nor paying enough attention to care who each character was.

Anyway, the reaction of both women NOT commenting nor reacting on the guy (was it the woman's husband?) being shot in cold blood? Then the other woman, with blood on her face proceeds and gives Benoit another gift? That bird with quills?

If I was the wife, I would've gotten up and shoved those quills down Benoit's throat and/or whack him upside his injured head/neck repeatedly!

Part of me wanted to laugh hysterically and/or maniacally but the better part of me was more shocked/horrified/incredulous by what transpired.

Hi.
The guy being shot is not the husband. We know both women from the beginning, the old one is a hooker and the other is a young musician. So, to me, the guy is a kind of friend the flute girl met when Ben was at the hospital.
So Ben (probably) doesn't know him very well, plus the guy was joking with Flute Girl who is a kind of Ben's "protégée", his pupil. The guy laughed loudly at a moment where Ben was seeking the attention of everyone (like always) for his birthday. Ben seemed jealous and annoyed.

Then, when he kills the guy, after the emotionnal shock, the old lady tries to reconnect to real life by offering her gift, like in any normal birthday party.

I think the idea of the blood on the women's faces add a great comical effect.

He's the former boxer Ben was speaking to in the beginning, the one who had quite a "wallop". They were obviously friends, just not good enough friends. Apparently.

It seems that the two ladies at that birthday party knew that he was a killer, perhaps not the full extent of his killings, but they had to know something. But his family (mother, grandparents) apparently had no idea.
