I have a friend who wants to be the Kristy Swanson Buffy for Halloween. Specifically, she wants to dress the way Buffy did when she was wearing the dress with the leather jacket. We don't have a copy of the movie on hand, so we can't verify what kind of shoes she wore. Were they Reebok high-tops? Does anyone know. Thanks in advance.
Well....this is tricky. Let's see if I can help....
The shoes worn by Swanson in the final sequence of the movie had muslin laces - the same kinds of laces found on boxing gloves. I don't know if that helps, but it's the most specific thing I can mention about that costume.
A question: Is your friend interested in looking the way Buffy did at the start of the event, or the way she did after Pike accidentally tore her dress? Because if it's the latter, a simple white ballerina costume should do.
As for the leather jacket, don't go nuts. That jacket belonged to Pike, after all, and he didn't have a lot of money. Any old jacket will do.
But I'm surprised that your friend does not want to don what I consider to be the most iconic Buffy costume of that movie: the famous midriff-baring hoodie seen on the poster (basically like Rocky Balboa's warm-up suit in ROCKY, but shorter, sleeveless, and lime-green instead of charcoal-gray). THAT would be the look to shoot for, especially for all those people who've seen the poster but haven't actually seen the movie.
And since the subject has been broached, let me take the opportunity to say that the costumes in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER really made the movie come to life for me. What the characters wear is a lot more important than many people might think.
Buffy's outfits, of course, were some of the best: bright and colorful, even comical, a kind of garish candle against the darkness of Buffy's secret life. I also appreciated Pike's clothing: boring, strictly for losers, but a harbinger of the grunge subculture just about to erupt. Merrick an urban prophet of doom in his hat and long coat. Lothos in formal wear and a cape, just as vampires should be. His teenage minions right off the Sunset Strip - loaded like a freight train, rock you like a hurricane...
This is a movie that stirs the imagination until you don't know what you like about it best. And the costumes definitely help.
