The movie remake

Joss Whedon's script for the original movie was butchered by the Kuzuis who made the tone more comedic overall by apparently scrapping major elements of the script. I feel they probably cheapened the movie a bit; because if Joss had more creative control of the movie, it surely would've been better. Then again, he probably wouldn't have decided to create the tv series if the movie turned out how he originally intended.

As far as them remaking Buffy the original movie, it only should be done with Joss Whedon's involvement. The Kuzui's need to do the heavy lifting and just have Whedon's stamp of approval on final details. From what I've read, they plan(ned) on making the new Buffy movie as basically a retelling of the first movie, and left room to make it a trilogy of movies. There's a lot of room for that in between the timeline of the end of the original movie and the beginning of the tv series. They plan on making it darker and more dramatic; much more intense than the original. It'd all have to tie in and compliment the original. They need to handle the material perfectly, because I think the original movie didn't live up to it's potential.
It's a great 90's cult classic black comedy, and I truly find it hysterical; I'd love to see a modern version of it though.

I don't care that we'd have new actors for the parts- except it would be cool to have cameos from Kristy Swanson, Hilary Swank, Luke Perry & Paul Ruebens.
Buffy should be played by Hayden Panetierre in my opinion- she fits the role perfectly, although some might say she looks too old for the part, playing Buffy at like 16. She is tough yet still really feminine- perfect for Buffy IMO. Not sure who else would really fit the role.

We need new faces for all the characters though. Paul Wesley as Pike, Ed Westwick as Benny, Elle Fanning as Nicole are perfect fits. Emma Roberts could pull off the odd/quirkiness of Cassandra. Kat Graham as Jennifer would work and Chace Crawford as Jeffrey as well (Yes, this cast so far is mostly ripped from the Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl). Anna Faris might be too old to play Kimberly, although I think she still looks young enough and she could most likely pull off the valley girl comedy- she's so funny. Chris Hemsworth as Merrick will probably get knocked. He's younger than Donald Sutherland (and actually sexy), but he's still got an accent and could make the role his own. I'd love to see John Stamos as Lothos- because he'd be darkly, oddly charming and he'd actually make the role sexy. I can't think of anyone to play Amilyn.

I hope if they go forward with the remake, it is thoroughly modern and gritty- yet still keeps the humor, because without that- it will not resonate as Buffy. It needs to have the perfect balance of Comedy/Drama/Horror/Action like the tv series did. It also shouldn't stray too far from the original ideas.

No. Do NOT have any cameos. That's just admitting that the new movie is bastardized. Keep the original names and characterizations and set the film sometime in the early '90s, but cast ALL new performers.

reply

bastardized? What do you want?- Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry to actually reprise their original roles?? Obviously not...and obviously, there's many that think it should be left untouched- but like I said, the original movie didn't live up to it's potential. The show more than made up for it, but the original characters and story between Hemery High and Sunnydale High are still open to be explored- IF it was done well of course.

reply

I don't think you understood. I do not want Swanson or Perry in the new movie AT ALL - or, for that matter, Sutherland, Hauer, Reubens, Swank, Abrams, Vaughan, or anyone else. I don't know who it was who first thought of casting "alumni" in latter-day updatings of older stories, but it was one of the worst ideas in entertainment history. As near as possible, this new BUFFY should be its own animal.

And while you didn't mention anything pertaining to it, I also might have been misunderstood when I suggested that the remake should take place in 1991-1992. I say that only because that is how the BUFFY movie is remembered - and, more to the point, how Joss Whedon wrote it. I understand that Hollywood tends to muff up period pieces, but I'd imagine the new Buffy being a bit more subtle in its atmosphere than the original. What I'd like to see is a generalized, almost vague sense of the early '90s, just like there was a sense of the '60s in the recent STAR TREK remake (of course, STAR TREK is actually set far in the future, but you know what I am saying!) or the late '30s and early '40s in the original BATMAN (1989). Which is to say, dress the characters in early '90s garb and place them among early '90s homes and furnishings, but otherwise have them be "modern."

Heres a better idea. Don't make it al all.

I heard its in developmental hell- wonder why. The first movie was HORRID. Just awful. I mean really, really, really bad- and not in a good way. I didn't laugh once.

This remake is DUMB. If Joss Whedon wanted to make a new Buffy- I'd support it, but as it stands at the moment- he doesn't. And with that- it shouldn't be made.

Sarah Michelle Gellar + Joss Whedon = Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I see no reason to try to challenge that. SMG and Whedon don't either.

Not to mention- I'm not really interested in seeing a "funny" version of Twilight.

I haven't heard any news on this "reboot" crap for a long time; we may be at a point where it's safe to say the development is in limbo, which hopefully means it will never happen.
I'd rather see a miniseries starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, portraying Buffy in her mid-late 30's, rather than going back to freaking High School - I mean, the whole "Vampires & High School" thing has been done to death, first with the crappy 1992 film, then with the brilliant series, then with Twilight & I think the Vampire Diaries may also have some High School settings.
To eternal burning hell with a reboot; a middle-aged Buffy played by SMG beats any film about a Slayer in High School.
