Does this movie take place before the show or not? i was always told yes but after starting to watch the t.v. a couple of days ago on netflix buffy is only 16 and not a senior in high school. However she is clearly already a slayer and has hdad teachings to prepare her. So did whedon decide to use a few things in the movie to cross over but not everything?

Watch the tv-series. Forget about the movie. (Yes the tv-show takes place after the events of the movie but Whedon was not happy about how the movie turned out to be so it's not strictly canon. The story of what happened in LA before Buffy came to Sunnydale was later told in a comic.)
