I guess that he knew that his only chance would be to try it at day (while Belocci and the other two were sleeping). In the movie I believe that, for a short time, he could move in a very unnatural way in the wall of the castle before falling down in the river (if someone is able to survive such a fall is another history).
shareOne can survive a fall like that. I recall a scene in Furious 7 when Hobbs and that agent fall thru a window from an explosion, onto the roof of car from several stories high. Both were injured but very much were able to survive
