WHY MOVE TO LONDON?

It´s been years since I last saw the movie and as I´m going to upgrade to the new Blu-Ray edition in the future, I´m now wanting right now to rewatch it again in DVD but I have a question. Why Dracula wants to buy a house in London? A new "hunting ground" in one of the busiest cities in Europe by the time? Did he allready knew that Mina/Elisabeta had reencarnated? Or he didn´t knew before Jonathan came to make business with him after his partner Reinfeld got mad, and by a destiny strike he was Mina´s fiancee? As long as I remember Dracula only aknowledges the reencarnation after he saw Minás photo. Can somebody tell me?

You should read the book, there are the explanations of your answers :)

Dracula planned to move to London for a very long time. He read english books, tradition etc. etc. so he would not attract attention.

Yes, he moves to London so he have a new hunting ground, as he said:

"l do so long to go through the crowded streets of your mighty London, to be in the midst of the whirl and the rush of humanity to share its life its changes, its death."

When he sees the portrait of Mina you can tell he is surprised - and that´s when the plot holes begin.

Thanks :)

I wondered that same thing. He wasn’t buying one property but several pieces of property scattered throughout London. Everything changes when he sees Mina in Harker’s Locket but the London plan was in place before that.

19th century London was a place where he could find lots and lots of humans who wouldn't be missed, and he did want a change of pace as local Transylvanians were probably getting thin on the ground.

But of course, every other major European city was full of people who wouldn't be missed! It's been years since I read the book, did it ever explain why he chose London over, say, Amsterdan or Istambul?

reply

No. Stoker’s novel, which does not much resemble this movie, treated the move to London as a matter-of-fact decision.

reply

Yeah, well, I suspect that the reason that the Dracula of the book chose London over Moscow or Paris (etc.) was that Bram Stoker lived in London.

reply

I suspect that as well. The first rule of writing is to write about what you know. Sadly, that rule is unknown to too many who post on message boards. I hope that you know I am not talking about you, Otter.

reply

You sweetie you!

Although I always liked Tom Wolfe's advice to other writers: "Dont just write what you know - know more!" (paraphrase). That is, learn enough about things outside your own experience to write about them. I mean, Wolfe never went into space, but he wrote the best book about astronauts ever.

But that doesn't mean you aren't absolutely right about the internet in general, so many opinions uninformed by either experience or research.

reply

Agreed, I think that might be the reason.

reply

That should be the reason.

I once knew a pair of conjoined twins who moved to London. All because the other one wanted to drive

reply

London had very loose immigration laws at the time
