Murphy WASN'T funny... that's why the LOW rating on IMDB

The people who gave Boomerang such a low score are probably fans of Eddie Murphy who expected him to be FUNNY. He simply wasn't. This was the beginning of his career's demise. When he was more interested in being the "coolest cat" on screen instead of the funniest guy in the movie. All the make up and custom designed clothes replaced him doing actual comedy. It's sad but a good lesson. After this he went on to middle of the road family fluff. What a shame.

EVERYONE was funnier than him in Boomerang!

Chris Rock was funnier.
Tisha Campbell was funnier.
Grace Jones was funnier.
Eartha Kitt was even funnier!!!

John Witherspoon was onscreen for less than 5 minutes and STOLE his scenes. He was HILARIOUS!!!

I've given up on him returning to form. Sadly those days are long gone. But who knows. Maybe one day a gray haired old Eddie Murphy will find that spark again and become a rough talking dirty old man with a mic like Redd Foxx.

I have to disagree. I think if he had been over the top funny it wouldn't have played into his playboy image. He had to play it cool. I still think he was funny though. Just a lot more smooth. When he screamed at the man in the store, when he was dancing in New Oreleans, when he said his tuxedo wasn't ironed, when he told that sob story to the first girl about his fake bride to be. He was hilarious. But to each his own.

I agree with 2nd poster...Murphy being his typical "screaming, exaggerated" self wouldn't have worked for this film...I also agree with the OP in that everyone else was funnier then him, but the movie still works IMO.

It's a classic....
I was about 21 when this movie was out and it was perfect for the time and the era. It was quirky and hilarous.

Him being funny didn't really fit his character in the movie. The movie was still funny tho.
