Now don't get me wrong, i'm a black woman myself but is it me or do black women seem less beautiful and classy now than they were at the time this movie was made?
Now it's like the only important thing is to be over-sexy, know what i mean?
Black characters in movies are less classy now. Even though there are more powerful black actors in Hollywood, it seem that that power came at a price. On the other hand, it is all about what you look at for entertainment. Every show i watch on tv these days has atleast one strong black woman in them, most prominently Private Practice, Boston Legal, and Shark. There are definitely quite a few, you just have to look for them.
I think in society, however... yes definitely. But that is an entirely different issue. Family Values in the black community are rapidly declining.
Black characters as a whole(movie and t.v) are less classy now. On the big screen we have Nora's Hair Salon part 50: Cuttin' up, Monique playing a loud mouth sloppy sex fiend, and First Sunday on the Soul Plane type movies. On T.V we have the likes of Flava Flav, New York, and the jokers on 106 and Park. Long gone are the days of Cosby, Living Single, and movies like Boomerang.
there definitely was a different type of black woman cast.
halle barry's character for example...she was so REGULAR and natural! she managed to be cute and still where baggy clothes (it was a different era yes, but still...), it was refreshing!
I don't know if this is true but in the mainstream more black people are into the gangsta style and mentality. That said don't right off all black women or anything like that--I know plenty of black women that you might call classy (and well-educated and doing productive things with their lives).
