Knowledge of DNA testing wasn't very widespread in 1992, so screenwriters were much less likely to take it into account, explaining why that aspect is absent in the story. However, a police department in the large city this film takes place in would most likely have access to DNA testing in 1992. So... I guess pretend it's 1982 instead of 1992? It's a ridiculous movie even without that component.

i did not know dna not wide spread in 1992. very interest. police work must be very difficult to do before dna times.
shareUsing DNA evidence was definitely a major game-changer for investigators. DNA forensics was first used in a few cases in the 80s, but as with anything new it took a while to catch on, expanding in the 90s. And even then, it wasn't nearly as reliable and expedient as it is today, and was much more expensive, so only large police departments in major cities had access to it.
