I saw this movie several times back in the day, and it hasn't aged well. I didn't really care about Nick and his dogged pursuit of a woman who invokes his DEAD WIFE as they're tussling. Maybe he was so filled with self-loathing he felt he deserved it, whatever. Gus was the only character I cared about. Anyone else?
He certainly didn't deserve the brutal death he received. Two of the people that truly cared about Nick were gone b/c Catherine, it is assumed he will get killed too, though he seemed to have a death wish.

I didn't feel sympathy for anyone else either, really. Jeanne was sad but she was REALLY stupid not to do what Nick was ordering her to do!
