Insane line of dialogue (One of many)

When the cops say to Michael Douglas, who is suspected of murdering a colleague: "Threatening him earlier in the day gets you off the hook for killing him."

What??!!

Yeah, I know this was a deliberate echo of the earlier line "Writing a book about a murder gets you off the hook for the murder," but would this crazy, bizarro "logic" ever hold up in the real world?

Even for a minute?

You are looking too much into it...

Basic Instinct is a classic forever..nothing will change that...
Verhoeven has his style..it´s a stylish movie...crazy, suspenseful, sexy...inteligent a little over the top in Verhoeven way...

I wrote the post you're responding to (I sometimes post as "filmklassik") and guess what? I agree with you! BASIC INSTINCT is a silly movie in many ways, but also an endlessly watchable one. No idea why, but it is.
