umm, after he saw jesus, he went and smoked crack with the rapists, why?

if he was a changed man, y did he decide to go smoke crack and get high with two of the rapists?

reply

I don't think he was a changed man, just that he was trying to make amends for some of the bad things he had done. He was still the same "bad" person though.

reply

haha, then there really is no point to this movie, except that drugs, gambling, and complete indulgence will kill you in the end.

reply

The point is perhaps that the kind of religious experiences that keitels character went through in the movie, really does'nt change you.

It's like life, sometimes we try to redeem ourselves but we are so far gone it's impossible.

When you need it you need it, everything else comes second. He's an addict and the sight of it makes him itch.

reply

Of course he redeems himself--normally, he would've blown the rapists' brains off, but like the nun, he forgave them.
There is a point to the film.

reply

He was being nice and giving them some crack before their trip.

reply

That WAS nice of him.

I just want to say that this is my favorite thread title in all of imdb LOL

It was like the last supper. Except with crack. "This is my body..." Then he gives them the cash he could have used to pay off the bets he lost. There was nothing inherently wrong with smoking the crack. Ref: "It's not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him..."

That's how I saw it. I thought that was the point of the movie.

he was conflicted about who he was throughout the whole film. When he sees Jesus he asks for forgiveness. He does smoke with the rapists because even if he turned over a new leaf he was still an addict. He did however redeem all of his sins by that act of kindness to those guys. He gave them a chance at their own redemption and for that his sins were absolved.

watched it last night for the first time and as the credits rolled thats the question I asked my husband. I think the movie would have been better without that last smoking scene.

Granted, Im not sayin we should have had the Bad Lieutenant (I think its funny on the IMDB listings he has no charactor name other than 'Bad Lieutenant'!)have a total turn around and become Mr Good Guy....but I can almost sorta wrap my mind round the "nun forgave them, so did HE" theory, but yeah. After beggin to what he thought was Jesus anbout how he was sorry he "did bad things (insert whale-like noises hear as Keitel sobs)" I thought it was stupid to see him poppin out the rock seconds later!~ Maybe thats just me.
