I finally saw this movie from Netflix and have to wonder about the NC-17 rating. That is the kiss of death for movies. This film is obviously made for an adult audience but I dont see how the rape scene was any worse than R rated versions of Last House on the Left (both versions), or any other R rated movies.
The movie shows what absolute corruption does to a person and it seems to me like a lot of teens could benefit from seeing movies like this.
I think it just has to do with the sheer absurdity but still raw power of it. Granted they dont "show" anything in the car scene but you have a guy OBVIOUSLY masturbating infront of 2 young girls while he spouts numerous sexual obscenities directed exactly toward them. As far as the rape scene goes, i honestly believe the NC17 comes from just the fact thats its a nun and the rape takes place right there in a church, right on the altar no less. Movie execs dont like *beep* like that haha. Ontop of all this you have a cop with a family, consumin hue copious amounts of very dangerous drugs like crack, heroin, coke, and ALOT of alcohol. Id say it earns its Nc-17 rating.
**taking a bang off a whisky bottle** Weve just ran out of wine, what are we going to do about it?
Maybe I just hate the MPAA too much. I think they should make a R+ category where the everything is the same as the R Rating but the R+ just lets people know that the movie actually earned the rating for some movie like the new Piranha, Last House on the Left type movies.
There is no need for NC-17 as it means death to movies (R almost does) and the porn industry steal uses X or XXX.
I was shocked that History of Violence got away with the R Rating after with the 69 scene in it. You know the prudes at the MPAA where just about to have a fit.

PS: Yes the teenage girls car scene was hilarious to me but believable.
You have to take into account the different time period on which the board gave they're rating. Nowadays it's actually very difficult to get an NC-17 because of how desensitized we all are to extreme scenery in movies.
I agree the BBFC is better now buy that was not in the past especially when they would ban the video Nasties.
I think the movie would get by with an R rating now only if it was released by a big studio. As an independent film, it would get the N-17 based on the rape and teenage girls in the car scene.
Don't forget Harvey Keitel showed his junk, isn't the penis still taboo and thus an almost guaranteed NC-17? Add one shlong to all the above mentioned scenes and I think you have the poster child for an NC-17 movie in the eyes of the MPAA.
It comes down to the same thing -- Sexuality = NC17 while nonstop realistic violence = R.
I just dont understand why depatitating someone is fine and even a single breast these days equals an automatic R.
I still think this movie should have received an R Rating at the time it wss released.
The one thing I have noticed about movies that originally received and NC-17 rating for violence is they change the color of blood to almost pink to make it look fake using CGI I would assume.
I guess changng the color of non explicit masturbation scene would have no effect on the rating.
Seriously though, they could have had an R Rating if they cut this movie down by about 10 seconds with the teens and still got the point across about how corrupt he had become and had a R Rating.
I wish more movies would be rated NC-17 but it is box office death when you cant advertise the movies, the multiplexes wont play them, and the big rental chains and stores that sell movies will not carry NC-17 movies.
it makes more sense to just release the movies at unrated.
The MPAA doesnt make sense. They gave fight club a NC-17 rating because Marla said "I want to have your abortion" but give it the R Rating when the line is changed to " I have not been *beep* like that since grade school.

That was because of pressure from the studio. Had nothing to do with the MPAA.
The Netflix streaming version has been cut and edited. it is not in it's original NC-17 format. The teenage car scene was cut before any of the hard core action began.
I have never seen a company go down hill as quickly as Netflix. They addedd crazy prices to keep even the simple one movie at a time with the streaming, they change the name and then change it back They then cnnnot renew a great deal of the content they had although movie studios play a part in that by asing absurb renewal fees. However, if they are now doing the blokbuster model of cutting films then they are useless as far as I am concerned. I have the streaming on;y ehivh I msinlu udr fot TV series but nless they get some new quality content, I will probably drop them.
Besdies, that scene was both hilarious and creepy at the same time but the point was to show how corrupt, immoral, and how ashamed he was of himself. I think it was an important part of the film.
They probably had to censor themselves to begin with to the get the NC-17 from the People's Board of Censorship and Moral Purity; Netflix censoring the censorship is just villainous
There are 2 versions of this film; the R rated version runs 6 minutes shorter. "Bad Lieutenant" is one film that totally deserves the NC-17 rating. This movie absolutely wallows in vice and degradation; it is one of the sleaziest mainstream films ever made. The rape scene with the nun is not the reason it got that rating, but it certainly helped. In the R rated version I remember that scene is shortened, cutting out the part where she is raped with the statue of the Virgin Mary. I'm pretty liberal, but I wouldn't want my 15 year old kids watching this. It's really too much.
"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'
NC17 is people who are not allowed to watch the movie until they are 18 here but in the US NC17 stands for "No Children unless you are 17 years and over". This movie totally deserves this rating because as its really vulgar and very frightning for people under that age. Even people are sesitive watching this movie because of the rap scene, just to be warned it could make a lot of people who are not used to adult movies can be very sesitive and emotionally tied up by them!
