Neep help understanding the "betting" plot.

So he successfully convinces his workmates a couple of times to bet on the Mets (because they're "due" to win one, etc) while he, himself, bets on the Dodgers?

What was his point in doing this, exactly?

What did I got wrong?

Very interesting read, even if doesn't exactly answer my question.

And it's a little bit reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who doesn't understand his exact motivation on this topic.

Thanks a lot!

Been a while since I've seen it, but?

Maybe trying to bring the odds up?

He wanted their money! Why pay it out when you can convince them to keep betting and keeps extra cash in his pocket. Odds can change too but it's only a couple guys, doubt they impact much.

Seems like managing his losses and/or covering them somehow. I think it's kind of standard bookie logic, especially if you make some percentage on everything. If you can lay off your bets, you can hedge your losses.
