1492: The Final Cut

Alright, there's been rumors of a 4-hour cut possibly heading to HBO and murmurs of a possible Criterion release but with the recent release of Blade Runner: Final Cut on DVD I just have to lobby for a DVD release of 1492 to be done similarly to Blade Runner with theatrical, international and the "longer" 4-hour edition of the film. It's just ridiculous that this film has rarely been seen since its theatrical exhibition in 1992. Since watching Blade Runner again I've been on a Ridley Scott retrospective kick and have re-watched Alien, Legend, Gladiator and I had to dig out my old widescreen laserdisc of 1492 because the region 2 DVD I have is so crappy looking. Come on Paramount and Scott Free Productions, this film is a masterpiece. Who cares if it was a critical and box office disaster. So was Blade Runner when it came out a decade before and here we are 25 years later and it's regarded as a classic. We have special editions of the other Ridley films, PLEASE give us 1492. It would be the perfect way to ring in the era of High Def.

There are various European editions, most of them pretty poor in visual quality. But the Dutch DVD (later versions) is a really good transfer, anamorphic widescreen, etc. Recommended! Also with 5.1 soundtrack, etc..
Of course, PAL, region 2. Needless to say it's the complete version of the film. The only one small downside is that for reasons I cannot comprehend, the opening and closing titles of the movie are from the French edition. They shouldn't be, they were the English version in the cinema, back in 1992.

I have to correct myself. I just put it in again, and it does not have the French, but the English titles. I must have been confused with the old widescreen VHS that I had.

In other words, for quality, get the Dutch release. Needless to say, subtitles can be turned off. The print that I have is from the "Quality Film Collection". Afilm DS90936
