Another Columbus Day nearing, still no DVD

It p!sses me off how seemingly every other country in the world has this on DVD, albeit with pretty crappy transfers, while the US doesn't have it. What the hell?

reply

It p!sses me off as well. I am surprised there aren't more people on this board complaining about it. I remember back in 2004 this was announced, Paramount gave it a upc number, the old release date was 11/16/2004, it was than cancelled and DVDempire removed the listing for preorders (I had preordered with them and got the cancellation e-mail). It was believed to be a bare bones Widescreen release and slated to include the theatical cut and not the international cut. I also have to agree the transfers of the 1492 DVD's from other regions are not the greatest the movie could look.

While both the 1992 Columbus films failed miserably at the US box office, studios release plenty of garbage all the time and I don't understand why both 1492 and CC: TD have never seen a USA DVD release, considering this is the discovery of the New World we are talking about here.

reply

i don't understand...

there are DVDs for this movie, I remember clearly renting one a few years ago, and in fact i'll probably browse a bit tomorrow (tomorrow=columbus day) at my local rental shop to watch this movie again

what about this amazon link? http://www.amazon.com/1492-Conquest-Paradise-Widescreen-Definitive/dp/B000J0UD94/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1255314531&sr=8-1

isn't that a DVD of the film

maybe i don't get the original poster question correctly, but I have to say that there are DVDs of this movie

All of those versions on Amazon are imports, the op is talking about a USA DVD release, which has never actually happened.

reply

I picked up the import from Amazon. Though it does work on Region One machines, the picture quality leaves much to be desired. I'm sure there are better bootlegs out there . . .

I can only hope a fully-restored version will be made available on Blu-Ray someday . . .

Sorry to tell you this but the quality of U.S. (NTSC) is the worse one in the world together with NTSC-J (Japan)

I'm also curious over why you seem to chocked that the rest of the world has it on DVD while the u.s. doesn't have it, like its an exception.

Movies, even U.S. produced ones, are released in other countries first. In the 90s and beginning of 2000 there were more movies released to DVD in Europe than in the u.s.

reply

It's not an exception, the simple fact is this is a great film and should be made available to people in the USA for purchase or rental. A nice approved edition from Ridley Scott on DVD and Blu-Ray in the USA sounds fair, at least they will be given a choice to buy the USA version or import it.

reply

so does anybody have an email or mailing address for paramount to push for a release?

reply

I swear if this was never released anywhere in the world on DVD there would be lots of upset fans on this board pushing for a DVD release. That being said there still is no R1 release and there are people out there who have been waiting and waiting many years for it's release. I contacted by e-mail someone at Paramount a few years ago after the 2004 DVD release was cancelled and they said they didn't have the video rights to release it, but I don't believe it one bit. If they (Paramount) didn't still have the distibution rights some home video company would have acquired the distribution rights by now since it's a Ridley Scott film. So they must be holding it back, waiting for the films 20th anniversary in 2012, at least you'd think it. One thing is for sure Ridley Scott has had plenty of time to get a nice edition of it ready for the R1 market.

I don't understand why though? You can import the PAL version which has superior quality anyway.

Is it a question that you think PAL is inferior or is it that you think you can't play a PAL dvd on your NTSC player?

Most players produced after 2005 are regionfree, and if your dvd player isn't free just look up the unlock codes on google.

OR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can import from Brazil which has the NTSC version among the PAL version.

Amazon has a NTSC version imported from Brazil: http://www.amazon.com/1492-Conquest-Paradise-Widescreen-Definitive/dp/B000J0UD94/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1265032016&sr=8-1

sven-degosson, people want a director approved edition with special features and a great DVD or Blu-ray transfer. The DVD's released in other countrys offer a decent transfer but very little in the way of special features. If it ever comes out in the USA, it will perhaps be the best edition available for the film. So while it may be available elsewhere with decent quality, it's not supervised by Ridley Scott which is what people are waiting for. Scott has released excellent editions of his films on DVD like Gladiator, Blade Runner, Alien, Kingdon Of Heaven, Thelma and Louise and Legend.

reply

I understand. Every country that I know of or have lived in rather gets directors cut versions / special feature packed versions though, its not something that is exclusive to the u.s. market.

However you are right when you say there's no directors cut version / special features version for this movie, I totally missed it being mentioned and only saw someone say that the ntsc versions would be superior in quality.

Good thing with Blu-ray is that every country gets the same edition. The movie has been out for a long time on DVD in Europe and that leads me to think there will be a blu-ray version coming out soon which means you guys should get it too.

reply

The major reason why is I want special features
