Paramount's Special Edition DVD: 1492: Conquest of Paradise

1492 was rumored to have been planned this year (2003) for release by it's studio, Paramount. As of yet no word on a possible release date for this great Ridley Scott movie. So far it has been released in just about every country worldwide (France, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, UK, Australia, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Russia) all with ok video and sound quality. Best International version available, with best transfer and sound is the France release region 2, 1492: Christopher Colomb. It's available everywhere else but here in the USA, that is why a region 1 USA title should be released soon, and why not around Columbus day this year? Like the 14th of October. Surprise us Paramount, release it. We know you can. Imagine how gorgeous this movie would look on a perfectly mastered DVD release. Well, Paramount holds us to it on that one.

I too would like a nice SE of this movie but I'm prepared to wait. As Ridley is supposed to be doing very Special Editions (along the lines of Legend & Alien DVDs) of all or most of his movies. So I would rather wait and get a version that has had lots of TLC then a rushed out, slap any old copy of the movie on the disc and throw in some features, type DVD that often pass for SE's these days. Maybe by then we will have HD-DVD and that will be even better.

The wait for this DVD that Paramount is giving all of us is pretty lame. I own the region 2 PAL version of 1492 on DVD, on my computer screen it looks amazing. This is one of Ridley Scott's best films, and Paramount could have released this on DVD when they first put DVD's out. My best guess is that Ridley Scott wants to fool around a bit and do a Directors cut, since they supposedly cut about 2 hours of material that was to be in the film. That's why it probably has not been released yet on region 1 DVD. Ridley just finished a Directors cut of Alien, that will be released back into theaters in the fall, and than released in an Alien box set. Ridley also finally released the Directors cut of Legend, which is probably besides this film, one of his best looking movies. And he also released a Directors cut of his sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. 1492: Conquest of Paradise, is one of his best movies, a historical masterpiece, it should've been on DVD already. The only explanation better be a Directors cut, because how lame of the studio Paramount to make people wait so long for this to be released.
