How did he know?...

.....When they first reach land and all, and they kiss it and shi te, Columbus says something like '' by the power invested in me...bla bla bla...I now name this ISLAND San Salvador..'' How did he know he was on an island. Weren't he supposed to check it out first to see if it was an island or mainland? I mean what did it give it away as an island?.....Tell me if I missed something...
Cheers...

In real life he landed in a small island in the Bahamas. It was obvious it was an island.

I'll admit I've done little sea travel, and no exploring of uncharted lands, but logically, unless you sail all the way around an island, how would you know it's not a peninsula? Unless you climb the tallest peak or tree, all your observations would be from sea level.
