WHERE is the DVD ?????????? Grrrrr.....

Greetings!

I've been waiting YEARS for the DVD release of this movie... and at this point I'm pretty fed up. What's going on? I grow more and more angry as each year goes by without this great movie being available on DVD.

Yes... I know that there is a version from Brazil available, and No... I'm not interested in buying it. I don't want to spend a small fortune to an overseas company or an Ebay scammer or import company that's going to jack up the price 300%... I just want to go to my local book store and buy a Region 1 official release DVD at the usual over-inflated price. Is this asking so much? To have the studio BEND OVER BACKWARD and have myself and thousands of others shovel THEM wheelbarrows of cash to deliver what probably costs them $1.00 in materials to produce? Sell it to me for $30 and make 3,000% profit for all I care... just RELEASE THE DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes,
Bawko

I am going to assume they wont release it without loading it up with extras. If these extras are to include interviews and commentary, they might be having difficulty in getting cast and crew to re-visit the film for their purposes of DVD distribution.

I comfort myself with the thought that they dont want to release a sub-par DVD version, and then make up double and triple dip for extra features.....

My History teacher owns this movie on DVD, in English. Not sure where he got a hold of it though, I'll be sure to ask him if he bought it overseas or off eBay

Did your teacher play this movie for class? I thought that this was an inaccurate film. A good movie, but just for entertainment.

Believe it or not, the Brazil Definitive Edition DVD is a must have. A beautiful widescreen transfer and magnificent 5.1 surround sound for the brilliant Vangelis score. This is my favorite movie ever, and I was desperate for a DVD copy. I ordered it through Amazon.com and was brilliantly surprised. It has scenes I had never seen before. It was a more complete version. Extended, in places, more violent, and over all breathtaking. I have to wonder, when Paramount does get around to it, will it have these new scenes in it? I hope so. If not, I'll never be getting rid of this Definitive copy. It's amazing.

Also there are some interesting special features. The only biff I have, is the menu is in Spanish. But it is very easy to navigate. I watch the DVD at least once a month. It is among my most treasured.

Australian release ...

reply

Agreed, this release has excellent picture quality, anamorphically enhanced at the correct 2.35-1 aspect ratio and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Anyone who really loves the film should have no problem ordering this version from ezydvd. I did about a year ago and my copy arrived in a week.

reply

Wow, the UK release isn't even anamorphic. http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=2738 Everywhere in Sweden I could only see the old full screen release, even though there's a later Scandinavian 2.35 anamorphic one sans 5.1 audio. I wanted to get the German release because the price was better than in Australia but all shops with a good price had ridiculous shipping. Never seen anything like that from UK. lol So I ended up ordering the Australian release from DeVoteD DVD anyway. Better extras too with 74 minutes of interviews.

I have been told by a very good source that in August/September 1492 Conquest of Paradise will be coming to Region 1 DVD by the Criterion Collection. I can't find it on the site but I trust this source. (A dvd specialty store owner)

I have a region-free Australian DVD released by Umbrella Entertainment ... there are no close captions, and for some reason the opening credits give the film's title in German! (Die Eroberung des Paradieses)

Indeed. The transfer is probably the same as for the German release:

The transfer seems to be identical to the German R2 DVD release. In fact, the film title during the opening titles is in German: "1492: Die Eroberung Des Paradieses."

Apparently in an interview from UK Review, Ridley Scott mentions that HBO might be commissioning a 4-hour cut of the film to be shown on their channel. Does anyone have a copy of this interview?

What's the UK version like?

reply

Well I have my Thai copy of the movie, which isn't great but watchable. I guess, better this than nothing.
Also for all of you who are still looking for a copy of the movie try http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/91618/1492_Conquest_Of_Paradise/Product.html for only 6£ you can't get wrong.

In terms of HBO wanting a 4 hours version cut of it, it is true. Knowing that this is the only channel capable of having series with tits, blood and open guts.
I was hoping for years to get Blade Runner remastered and extended, then comes the news we all know.

My highest hope was to see 1492 the way it was always meant to be seen. This movie is so underated, that is just incredible.
Ok Gerard Depardieu voice and accent is the downside of the movie, but dear me, isn't Vangelis score not powerful enough to make you forget about it and transcend it?

Lucky enough it was directed by Ridley Scott, and thanks to the heavens we know the guys loves his work and always want to give the best of his works to the fans.
(Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven...)

I wish I could just send him a message of support, and thank him for all the effort he puts in making his movies look just "grandiose".

I am equally frustrated like everyone on else.I live in S.F.,Ca. and bought a DVD of 1492 for $15.99.It's full screen and has Dolby Digital. It is not of the quality one would get from Criterion or HBO but is very good. The DVD jacket does not give a running time unfortunately.I have e-mailed Criterion begging them to put out a Director's Cut.The legal obstacles alone make any Criterion project very expensive but I would be glad to put out $40.00 for a fully-restored ,director's cut of this greatly underrated film.In the meantime I will have to make do with this DVD put out by ODYSSEY FILMS,which is a Chinese co.that goes by the name of Garry's Trading Co. Chinese subtitles are available on this 4:3 version.

I bought the movie in Rome. It opens with French opening credits and prologue. Then dialogue and sub-titles are in Italian. I didn't realise that I was perhaps one of the very few people who had this DVD in the states until reading this thread.

One can pray that Paramount will get off their lazy asses and make a descent DVD for 1492 around the time American Gangster is released.
