One of the most underated movies ever.

This is perhaps the most underated movie I have EVER seen. It is simpy beautiful. The Music, Cenimatagraphy, Art Direction, Costume design, and Editing all deserved Oscars. Or at the very least, Oscar nominations. This film is simply beautiful. It`s really a shame that this masterpeice by my favorite director (Ridley Scott) was passed over and forgotten when it deserved so much more.

I totally agree, definitely underrated...Great plot, great acting but unfortunetly we live in a world where crash gets the Oscar instead of borkeback mountain..:(

reply

hehe u said borkeback mountain.

but aye i agree, underrated movie. where is the US dvd?

reply

I agree too. I can accept that this movie didn't do so well at the box office since it really isn't a mainstream film but it's beautiful in it's own right and should have gotten more credit. The music really is great (~Vangelis, loved their music in Blade Runner too) and should have got nominated/won. Ridley is my favourite director too, love his work and the way he immerses a viewer into his films. The movie is underrated no doubt.

reply

crash was better than gayback mountain, munich was better than both put together though.

reply

Yeah a movie about gay cowboys wasn't as good as the movie about racism but of course you say that the movie about jews getting revenge by assassinating people(which is illegal, everyone is entitled to a trial under international law) is better than both? lol Do you realize the common denominator is for all of these movies? They are gleaming examples of cultural marxist jewish programming in hollywood, google "who controls your mind 2013" to see for yourself who owns the media in the "West", we used to use another "W" world but now they've decided that it doesn't exist anymore but all other races do exist and that "Western" countries are just melting pots of diversity and it's progress to throw away traditions and culture and embrace everything(including your own destruction)because "love, tolerance, peace, we're all human beings." meanwhile everyone else has a closed society and a highbirth rate we have open societies and low birth rates all of which are controlled by groups of people from the arabia who've been waging total war against us for over 2000 years on every front, spiritual(Christianity, Islam), economic(jizya, jewish gold and banking monopolies, boycotts/embargo's),physical(moors, mongols(Khan was raised Buddhist converted to islam before invading Europe with a primarily Muslim army, Khazars(jews who invaded southern Rus(viking ancestors of the russians) after they spread multiculturalism in "khazaria" the country fell apart as all multi culti societies do over time and they fled to europe and became the ashkenazi jews of germania), Turks(a group from western Mongolia/Kazakhstan) who invaded "western" lands in the middle east before conquering Anatolia and half of Europe and holding it for 700 years raping murdering and mutilating and enslaving millions.)

reply

oh crash was better than brokeback mountain! BY FAR, munich would've won against brokebak mountain. every movie nominated wouldve won against brokebak mountain. well anyway the oscars are screwed and they never giv em to the right people.

I thought this movie is a classic and wen i got it at the video store, it was in the classics section. BRILLIANT and very interesting. It was probably just a tiny bit slow but its not badly effected by that in any way, i love it but it didnt stand the test of time, why?

reply

I might be inclined to agree with your sentiment about 1492, but Brokeback Mountain was an utter piece of crap.

reply

This is one I'm definitely glad I saw on the big screen, it's one of those epics that are best experienced that way. That said, I can't believe it's STILL not out on DVD, especially since Ridley Scott is hardly an obscure director. If Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead finally got released, surely this will too.

reply

I LOVE this movie, when they sail to the new world for the first time and we hear that fenomenal song Conquest of Paradise, it is so inspiring we just feel compelled to enter that world of fantasy and just hear the sound of the waves crushing into the sand..................

reply

Absolutley. This has been one of my favorites since its release. Surprisingly few people you see it with tend to agree though. They see it as slow, not epic, but the first half hour of this film sets the scene for the founding of the New World, so it shouldn't be rushed. Yes, Depardieu, faultless! (Could watch him in anything!). And this is one of the few films that has no "wasted" dialogue or poor lines.

reply

Don't get me started how this movie was robbed not in the same year that such ilk as Home Alone 2 and Sister Act were considered blockbuster hits. Oh, yes, Wayne's World was among them.

So, you see, crap does rise to the top.

reply

I'm taking issue with Sister Act and Wayne'sWorld being "crap". Actually list some BAD movies if you wanna talk about crap. The ones you mention weren't exactly garbage my friend lol Especially Wayne's World - it's STILL funny although the sequel is alot funnier. 1992 had ALOT of great movies - but you wanna talk crap say "freejack", "ladybugs", "Pet Cemetary Two", "Rock-a-doodle", "public eye", "Prelude To a Kiss", "Twin Peaks","Medicine Man"...etc but to each his own - I just don't think you mentioned any actual crap lol

reply

This movie is such a brilliant effort by Scott but definitely with some fatal flaws. If you dont see them you would love it. as I do!
the best side of the movie is its legendary music, fantastic and lovely to hear a thousand times...

reply

This movie is brilliant! So many people love the audiovisual power of "Gladiator", but they alwas fail to see that all this was already in "Conquest of Paradise", which is also much more deeper on the intellectual site. In my opinion, this movie defined the modern "history movie" genre, the people just needed something more simple like "Gladiator" to understand it.

reply

This is probably one of thé most convincing historical epics I've ever seen. In terms of mood and atmosphere the first half easily rivals "Aguirre, the Wrath of God". It's definitely underrated, although I would agree that the second half is somewhat unfocused. I've yet to see a movie that handles early colonial troubles convincingly. "The New World" was a fairly decent effort, recently.

reply

I love this movie. Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors of all time. The cinematography in this film was breathtaking! The soundtrack is on of cinemas best. This film has aged well like a fine wine and new audiences will discover this hidden gem in time.

I totally agree, the cinematography is breathtaking and alongside with the soundtrack composed by Vangelis the movie manages to create the atmosphere depicted and promised in the gripping opening lines, supported also by one of the greatest tracks from the OST.
It also succeeds in portraying the controversial personality of Colombus, a great sailor and navigator, also a true explorer and "dreamer", who was less successful in organizing and leading colonies. 8/10 at least.

reply

I totally agree. I was one of the few people who actually saw this in the theatre, and I was totally blown away by it. Ridley Scott is a total master of his craft. Every time Vangelis' score boomed through the movie, the theatre shook. If I had to complain anything about the movie, it would be the casting of Gerard as Columbus, which is one of the main reasons this movie tanked. People can't take it seriously that the comedic frenchman is playing a character as historic and sober as Columbus an Italian/Spanish figure. Otherwise, I think Depardieu actually did decently in the role, and all the rest of the plusses in the movie totally overwhelmed any problems I had with him. TOP MARKS from me.

reply

I don't agree.
Scott's direction was somewhat heavy-handed, as was the acting, and the pacing was uneven.
Far from a masterpeice; 6.1 is an accurate rating.
