Sightings article on 'Scifipedia'

I posted here last year, echoing what all of you are saying about being a "Sightings" fan and missing the show (my earlier post is still here). I originally watched the show when I was in my 20's (I am now in my late 30's).

Back in the 1990's, I missed the first specials of the show, but started watching it shortly after the weekly series debuted on Fox and kept watching it until it was canceled. At the time, I didn't even realize the show had returned in syndication in 1994 (I read this on the internet years later). I caught it again on one of my local stations at 1:00 am on the weekends late in 1995 (the fourth season) and watched it for a few months until the station either moved it or dropped it. I read online that the show had been picked up by the Sci Fi Channel for its final season, but I didn't get the channel on my cable at the time and missed it. When I finally got Sci Fi on my cable, I watched most (if not all) of seasons 3 and 4 that they were repeating at the time (early 2000's). I still haven't seen any of season 5 (for some reason, Sci Fi wasn't repeating those episodes at the time). I'm still hoping that they will put the show on DVD, but, so far, nothing. I've written letters to Paramount and Henry Winkler, but did not receive any replies. (They probably won't put the show out on DVD unless they get hundreds or thousands of letters.)

I recently wrote an article about "Sightings" and published it on Scifi.com's "Scifipedia". For those who want to read it, the link is: http://scifipedia.scifi.com/index.php/Sightings or go to www.scifi.com, click on their Scifipedia link, and search for Sightings under the categories "TV Series", "Paranormal", and "ETs and UFOs". Let me know what you think of the article. (I've also written several other articles on similar shows for that site such as "Encounters: The Hidden Truth","The Paranormal Borderline", "In Search Of...", and "Unsolved Mysteries", among others). For some reason, the editors haven't put a photo on that article (I wish they would put up one of the show's logos).

I was missing the show so much that I recently bought a Sightings CD-ROM that was released in 1998 for the PC called "Sightings: The UFO Encyclopedia". I didn't even know about it until earlier this year when I was doing a Sightings search on the net. I was lucky enough to find someone on ebay selling a new copy of it, but haven't seen it for sale anywhere else. I also found a few other mechandise items of the show that I didn't know about (see below).

I'm posting these Sightings-related links for those of you who haven't found them already.

Merchandise:

Do a search on Amazon.com for "Sightings" in the apparel section. There is an alien T-shirt and two different Sightings wall hanging tapestries (alien and ghost) from Old Glory (you can also order them directly from their site www.oldglory.com).

There are also two different books and three different VHS tapes of the show usually available on Amazon (most of you probably already know about these).

Hope this post was helpful.

Hi Mike, It's good to see you putting in so much work to get this show on DVD and keep it fresh in people's minds.

I cannot recall what seasons I watched or anything like that, I just remember watching it whenever I could and then following it to Sci-Fi. The only Sightings merchandise I have is one of the books by Susan Michaels. It's blue and has the faint image of a ghost on the cover. I don't think I ever saw the other one.

I'm about to read your Scifipedia article now and I'll give you my thoughts later.

Here's another site that fans can post on to let company executives know what you want released on DVD: www.hometheaterforum.com

I wrote a post on that site about Sightings titled "Will 'Sightings' ever be released on DVD??" (by Mike T) and the link is http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/showthread.php?t=228697 . (If that link doesn't work, click on "HT Software - TV shows and movies" on the forum jump button and then do a search for Sightings. My post should be in there somewhere.) It is currently on the first page, but it will get bumped down soon. The more people reply to this thread, the better the chances are of the show getting a DVD release. Thanks.

Your wasting youre time writing to Henry Winkler, His hands are tied now by the Bernie Madoff scandal, he lost his entire fortune in a Fonzi Scheme and now doesnt even have the capital to mail you back as he cant afford stamps.

MrT1979,

I had to write back because you made a very funny little mistake in your posting. Either it was intentional, or if not, it still gave me a good laugh. Henry Winkler may have lost his fortune in a "Ponzi" scheme, but not a "Fonzi" scheme. "Fonzie" was the character he played on "Happy Days". Please know I am laughing with you, not at you. I thought it was a very funny slip up.

Unfortunately, since I wrote the post above in 2006, SciFi.com (now "SyFy.com") has taken their "SciFiPedia" off of the internet. Therefore, my "Sightings" article and other articles on TV shows that I (and many others) wrote for that website are all gone now. This apparently happened last year (in 2009) when SciFi decided to change their channel's name (to "SyFy") and along with it their website name. Apparently, they didn't think that a "Sci Fi encyclopedia" fit with their new "brand". So, they dropped it and didn't even notify anyone who wrote an article in case they wanted to save their articles to their computers. Jerks!

Oh, well. At least, my articles were up for people to read for about 3 years or so. I hope that everyone who wanted to read my "Sightings" article got to while it was there. I put a fair amount of research into it and was proud of it.

Just thought that I would let everyone know who cares to know.

that sucks

reply

Yeah, it does suck. But there's nothing I or anyone can do about it. If I had known at the time that SyFy would take down that site with all of those articles one day, I wouldn't have bothered writing 12 of those entries. Oh, well.

I'm not the only one who's unhappy with some decisions that the new SyFy has made. Many people online are complaining about their programming line-up. Yet SyFy seems to be doing well enough to stay in business.
