Omg, how could he settle for Alison. By the end, Jake looked tired. The writers gave him tired storylines.

Where was the Jake from season 1? It was sad to see him go.

I can't see why any guy would want to be with Alison. Especially why Jake would want to continue being with her after she lost the baby she was carrying due to own (usual) selfishness.

Their brief study episode in season one was cute, so how the writers completely screwed up that relationship later on was beyond me. They could've been at least borderline interesting, but it was like they knew Courtney and Grant were leaving so they just sort of ended up in their own little island until they left.

You summed it up very well. By the end, Allison was so unlikable and Jake had dated pretty much everyone else in that complex...so why not just write them a happy ending? Their whole relationship in season 5 felt more like convenience for the writers, than a well written romance.
