Keep in mind the show has been off the air longer than they've been alive - which shouldn't be an excuse because, as teens, we knew almost every episode of "Good Times" by heart - but I'll cut them a little slack.

Yes, I grew up watching old shows too. Also, I think it has to do with the fact that Martin Lawrence didn't become a popular actor like Will Smith: all of them knew Fresh Prince of Bel air.
Yeah, I figured that same thing about Will being a bigger star than Martin. Plus it doesn't hurt that "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" is aired, in reruns, on Nickelodeon, meanwhile there's no way in hell that they would be airing reruns of "Martin" on a kid-centric network.
But still, black kids - at least - should know about "Martin" through their parents/older relatives etc. My 5 year old told me he wants to dress as Romey Rome for Halloween, next year. LOL

My sister's three children ranges from 7 to 11 all watch Martin and Fresh Prince. It's easier for them to connect with Fresh Prince because they know of Will Smith's annoying children and because Fresh Prince airs on so many channels, including what was mentioned above; Nick. I always thought Martin was funnier.
I used to watch this show with my parents, but they stopped letting us watch it towards the end of the series. I guess they felt like it was inappropriate for young kids to be watching. This show did talk about sex a lot more than Family Matters and Fresh Prince, so that might be why a lot of teens and young adults aren't as familiar with this show as the others. I do love this show more than the others though. I think it's funnier and more relatable.
