He was def a hustler of some sort. Dude had connections to celebrities (Will Smith, Hallie Berry, Shaq, etc.) for Martin's birthday. You don't get those being a regular Joe. Tommy had to have been a big time drug dealer.
In Thomas Mikal Ford's movies he always played a big time drug dealer. I always wondered if that's what they were hinting towards on the show after seeing him in Harlem Nights.

In one episode he mentions how he went to law school and learned a lot of techniques there. Thus, he is multi-degree bearing. In several episodes he is running things and teaching classes at the local community center- further evident of a legitimate lifestyle. In another episode, his job sends him on a trip to a ski lodge. He was able to bring all his friends along- all expense paid. Remember Aquanetta also works with him-- and on this trip she offers him a promotion to another job. He clearly had a legit (and legal) job.
