What if the show had gone on into season 7?

Had Adrian Paul not got tired of being in Highlander and the show continued into season 7 what would anyone want to see happen?

reply

id like to see all the open-ended storylines to finally have a conclusion.

would also like to see the immortals from previous episodes that were alive, come back and get killed off.

if this Season 7 were the last. then id like to have seen Connor MacLeod show up and have an adventure with Duncan. would have been nice to see Connor take a head for a change.

and like i said if it were the last season, it best have some finality to the characters. where its not so ambiguous as to what becomes of them.

I agree with you that it would have been good to see Duncan kill those immortals that he faced before such as Felicia Martins who certainly has it coming to her for murdering that poor baby. Also it would have been great to see
David Keogh return when maybe Duncan finds out that he is once again stalking another woman who he is fataly atracted to causeing Duncan to fight his old friend one last time.
So it's treason then!

reply

And don't forget Kenny, the child Immortal. As much as I love certain shows, I can't stand it when a show starts something but doesn't revisit that particular story thread.

reply

It would have been great to see Kenny return and finaly get the death he deserved.

reply

Yeah, although there are some that likely would have been in protest crying that the hero shouldn't kill a kid, even if he was one evil little Immortal.

reply

That one wouldn't have been able to happen unless they got another actor to play Kenny since the actor died in a car accident after his second appearance. He probably would have been too old looking anyways by season 7 to reprise the role.

First off, I wish the show could have done a rewind and get rid of that whole "Ahriman" arc, that was the stupidest thing they ever did (and redundant to the "dark quickening" arc) and I think killing off Richie was the single worst mistake of the entire series, they took 5 yrs to nicely develop the character, we watch him go from mortal to immortal, from a boy to a man, develop a deep father/son ,teacher/student relationship.....and then he is killed by a posessed Duncan....RETARDED ! , I am still furious 15 yrs later.
If any character should have gotten killed it should have been the annoying Amanda who overstayed her welcome in my opinion, and it would have proved that even the near ancient immortals could be vulnerable.
We could have easily gotten two more good seasons out of the show by wrapping up some loose ends from previous seasons, exploring more of Methos past and episodes surrounding that ( for christ sake you had 5000yrs of history to pull from), exploring more of Richies' maturation and development as an immortal, of course more "bad guy of the week" episodes, which I didn't mind, despite complaints of other fans. I would have liked some more "training sequence" episodes that pay homage to the Shaw bros. kung fu movies training scenes, perhaps Richie runs afoul of an immortal whose skills are way above his, perhaps even above those of Duncan himself, and he need to seriously prepare and expand his martial arsenal and skill set. Here's another idea thay never explored: how about TWIN immortals. Bottom line is that there were plenty of places to go with the show, most of the season 6 episodes were abysmal and poorly written, a waste of the production budget, they really should have upped the ante and the action towards the end and went out with a bang and on a high note, rather than the lingering death that the last 12 episodes were.

the point of killing Richie was because of the emotional impact it would have had. he was there from the first episode and onward, so to kill him would have certainly been the surprise no one would have ever imagined.

i dont like the way he was killed even though to me it works in the idea of having the kind of traumatic event that would change Duncan MacLeod into a slightly different character.
of course if Richie were simply killed by an evil immortal it just wouldnt have done it justice.probably would have angered people even more. i would have seen it as repetitious to have Duncan go after some immortal that killed his friend. its been done too many times.

Amanda was the consistent love interest. cant really kill her off because it wouldnt have been as dramatic as when Tessa was killed.

indeed they could have done several different scenarios to further explore the realm of immortals. several episodes of just Methos. maybe some where its just Dawson being a watcher and taking care of watcher things that dont involve MacLeod.

The Raven spinoff worked in that we see Amanda and her adventures. though Amanda isnt as strong a character to play the lead.

hell you could even have the whole SEARCH FOR CONNOR storyline play into a season as an ongoing arc.that would have added some mystery to things.

It should have ended with season 5, you can tell by watching season 6 that Adrian Paul did not want to do it anymore.

reply

well that was the plan for season 6. Abramowitz wanted to go 30 years into a dark future. where Ahriman took over. it was up to Duncan to come out of hiding and venture out into this dark depraved new world and defeat Ahriman. though due to lack of a decent budget, they couldnt make it happen.

Maybe the actor who played Richie want out as well? I hate went actors got a great show going and they decide they are too good to do it anymore. I loved the show, and I know most shows have to end. But they should be cause the have done all the can with the show, no because an actor think they are just to good for the show anymore. Maybe I am wrong, but where are they today? Also, if Paul was done with Highlander, why do these movies? Endgame was ok, but the other one was just bad.

no sadly Stan Kirsch wanted to continue playing Richie because he as well as the writer that created him, were so attached to each other.
it was Adrian Paul that said they need to kill off one of the regulars. that that would be enough of an impact to take Duncan MacLeod into a different direction.
Abramowitz chose Richie. which in their defense made sense because Richie was always the sidekick. they did all they could with having him be the central focus of several episodes and see him grow up and be educated as an immortal. by season 5 he was a guest star, so as a surprise ending they killed him off in a fairly interesting uncommon way.
i liked that Richie's death did turn MacLeod into a more passive character. he became more zen-like and less of the boy scout. he was no longer the guy trying to get into people's business and be the judge, jury, and executioner.

what i didnt like about season 6 is that the regulars didnt return till the end of the season. so Richie dying was like if Methos, Joe, and Amanda died too. because they were absent for the entire season. there was little to no character development for them.
the reason for that was because they didnt know a sixth season was going to be made. so they each went and did their own thing.
Adrian Paul was the one who wanted out because in his mind he was going to be a big star and do movies. similar to how Christophe Lambert was a big movie star in the early 90s.

as to where are they now?..

Stan Kirsch did a few projects. in recent years hes been an acting teacher. which is pretty cool i suppose. hes been acting since he was a young kid. so he has lots of experience.

Elizabeth Gracen who had gone back to art school during season six had done The Raven tv series during a time when her life was just filled with drama. after that got cancelled she got into financial difficulties and did bit parts in tv shows here and there. in 2002 she basically retired from acting. last thing i heard of her was she returned to acting and was doing voiceover work.

Jim Byrnes had his own little tv show for a time. but mostly hes just been doing music the past 10 years.

Peter Wingfield retired from acting and went back to medical school. so he is a doctor by now.

Adrian Paul is still an actor and producer. he has been involved in a few projects the past 10 years. not big mainstream movies , but small indie flicks. some have been pretty good, others very cheap looking and weak storytelling.

Paul was tired of doing the tv series. and its understandable that since he lived the character for 6 straight years , that as an actor it grew tiresome. as with all actors, he wanted to move on to something else and play different roles. he was fine with doing Highlander films because the scheduling for making a movie is more lengthy in time. whereas a weekly tv series consisted of working almost every single day on a rushed schedule.
in those 6 years he picked up all the usual skills that one tends to on a production that spans that long. he became a pretty good director in the process.
so Highlander Endgame was something he was all in favor of. it was after that that Highlander didnt really pickup any more popularity.so he was kind of fed up with the stigma behind it. that he was always being stereotyped and only known as Duncan MacLeod. he stated before that the character is NOT him. that he as an individual is very different. so he very much wanted to distance himself from Highlander.

he did Highlander:The Source because he was given the role of Executive Producer. so he went in with the good faith that he would have more control over the production and have it be done right. if youve seen in any of the behind the scenes material from the span of the franchise, he is very very serious about Highlander and the characters. he knows how things should and shouldnt play out.
though as the problem with the past 3 Highlander films..they got a director that didnt really know what he was doing. it was a failed project from the getgo. it never even had an ending filmed. thats how bad it was.

that film killed the franchise. when Bill Panzer passed away, that was the final slap to the face.
in recent years Adrian Paul got over it and embraced the fact that he got to play such an iconic television character. which is why you seem him at conventions a lot, answering Highlander related questions while at the same time trying to promote his other work.
its a shame he didnt do more Highlander related stuff outside of the audio adventure recordings. i mean the guy has aged gracefully, he still looks the same as he did 10 years ago. we could have had plenty of Highlander films the past decade if only the franchise had more backing.

Peter Wingfield didn't stay retired from acting for long as he recently guest starred on an episode of Alphas.

Adrian Paul is a very talented actor and I wish he had continued on as Duncan for more seasons but I can understand that he grew tired of the role but its a shame his carrer never took off like it should have.

yeah Richie aged.. I don't see that as being very important though, we know he's playing an immortal character, we know he's not immortal in real life.. it's something we can get over.

As to the necessity of killing off a regular cast member, I do sort of agree with that notion.. that was one of the things that I really appreciated about this show in that they were willing to kill off some of the main good guys, Darius, Fitzcairn, Tessa... it was emotional and made the show more real to me.

If Adrian Paul didn't want to do it anymore.. well.. I suppose killing himself off was out of the question.. but I would have preferred that and Richie being taken as a student by Methos, taking his teaching in a different direction than Duncan's honorable ways. Teaching him to survive, and win at (nearly) any cost.. teaching him his skills and giving us glimpses into Methos' past where he learned these skills.

The immortal stuck as a kid wouldn't have been able to make any more appearances if the show went on. Even the second appearance was pushing it.

Interesting blog entry by a tv writer that speaks to the topic of actors becoming bored with their successful shows.
