How exactly does she go blind in the movie?
Didn't they have goggles back then?
(As you can tell, I haven't seen this movie in a reeeeeeaaaaaaaallllllly long time.)

Remember sonora didn't want to see a doctor after diving 40 feet into the water after the accident

that scene was funny

The Dr. said her retinas were detached and the hemorrhage had continued without care. My question is, was there actually medical treatment for that back then?
Could they have done anything?
Sonora details what they did as far as treatment in her autobiography. It involved 3 surgeries and laying for months on her back & completely still.
shareas someone who has had a retina detach before - there's no way to know what's happening to you unless you have fully researched retina detachments before.
For instance, I had my retina begin to detach and thankfully it was reattached through surgery but as I understand it much of the ways they re-attach retinas now (scleral buckles- a piece of silicon or plastic that holds the retina in place that is sewn into the eye; sewing the retina back together with the use of a laser or scarring the eye with whats called 'cryotherapy' to jump-start the healing process as well as a gas permeable bubble are what they do now.)
Once your retina is detached past a particular point, there isn't much left that doctors can do. And this is what my doctor- a retina specialist - told me. And even then there is a risk of having the retina re-detach even after surgery and there's a small chance but still a chance that you can go blind either way even if you have had that surgery. And this was 2010 when I had my surgery. The point of this story is that you cannot feel a retina detachment happening since it does not hurt - the only thing is a gradual darkening (looks like a lampshade pulling over parts of your eye) and decrease in your vision.
I imagine Sonora felt pain of water in her eyes after the dive that blinded her but I imagine the retina detachment was not painful (mine was not) itself. If the movie held any truth to that scene, I'd also imagine that once the doctor did see her, her retinas had probably already detached effectively blinding her at that point. Hope that helps.
My father was in a severe car accident many years ago and had both of his retinas detach as just one of the many injuries and complications. As you said, you don't realize what's happening at first. My father had some discomfort (just felt tired/sore) at first because he also had some hemorrhaging, but given his other injuries it wasn't the focus at the moment. It wasn't until days later that it was discovered when he was suddenly completely blind! Both of the retinas detached. Until then, I never knew it was possible to repair that kind of injury. My father needed many surgeries for this issue alone. The frightening part is that even if they are able to re-attach them (not always possible) then there is still a chance it may not restore sight or if so, there may come a day when the repair no longer holds. A frightening possibility.
