Especially for a remake, especially starring the Redgraves which are both a treat in tbis...I even forgive it for having that corny synthesizer music of the nineties that was used in many tv-movies. I have (and am lucky) a vhs copy. I can remember when this premiered on ABC. It was sooo scary that I kept the TV Guide cover. I think it was just as good as the original with a more cartoonish Billy character.
Nope, I'll have to agree the remake was surprisingly good. I'm no purist. F--- that. Although, I liked the original I don't see what's so "definitive" about the medium of film. Why can there be 100 different version of a play (even on film!) but novels are limited to ONE and only ONE interpretation? I mean there are times when remakes are better than the original - The Maltese Falcon. While I 'm not saying this is the case here I prefer to judge every movie on its own merits. That said, I'm sure many of you would appreciate this product more if you hadn't seen the original first.
Also, it may just happen that you DID see this one first. Don't let the fact that its a remake blind you into thinking that it is inferior becasue of the fact. I know there are plenty of people who do just that.
I have the vhs of this too. I remember seeing it as a little kid when it first aired on NBC. I tell you, the scene with the scissors in the back really freaked me out, I remember screaming out loud. Oddly enough, I love horror movies and I'm not generally disturbed by any of them...this movie on the other hand...
The whole "angle" behind this remake was the pairing of the Redgrave sisters playing...sisters. It was hardly the controversial casting that Bette Davis and Joan Crawford was, and there obviously were no fireworks behind - or in front of - the camera. JANE needs the added tension of knowing the two actresses aren't particularly fond of each other - we never get that with the Redgraves, who have had their differences but are known for their familial devotion.
Those of you who think you know everything should politely defer to those of us who actually do!
