Arnold's Terminator was inept

After the T1000 was frozen by the liquid nitrogen bath, the CSM101 shot it, which shattered it into a bunch of small pieces. That was the dumbest thing he could have possibly done. As a large frozen mass, it would have taken a long time for the T1000 to thaw. By shattering the T1000 you get a bunch of small pieces which will thaw out very quickly. For example, compare how long it takes to thaw a whole frozen pig carcass vs. how long it takes to thaw a frozen one-inch cube of pork.

Once the T1000 was frozen it was game over, had the CSM101 not tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It would have taken hours, if not days for the T1000 to thaw out, which should have given the CSM101 plenty of time to come up with the obvious next move, i.e., pick up the frozen T1000 and throw it into the molten steel.

It's no surprise though, because ineptitude runs in the CSM101 family. See here - https://moviechat.org/tt0088247/The-Terminator/592684c77e888d0011cacb11/The-Terminator-was-inept

That's Cameron for you. A cool scene over common sense.

Yeah, that move always bugged me.

Funny. I've never seen this brought up but this scene also bugged me ever since I was a kid. It seemed pretty clear right away that shooting the frozen T 1000 was pointless & counterproductive. Arnold basically made the situation worse when they actually had a good opportunity to take the T 1000 out permanently.

Well the T1000 would have thawed quickly anyway due to the molten lead/steel that was coming towards it. What Arnie should have done was pick up the giant icicle and thrown it into the furnace when he had the chance.
