The Beginning

IN THE BEGINNING, WHEN MRS. TWIGG WAS HOLDING "HER" BABY, SHE SUSPECTED IT WASN'T HERS AND SAID SO TO THE NURSE WHO THEN DISMISSED HER COMMENT WITH "YOU'RE JUST A NERVOUS MOTHER." AT THAT TIME, WHY DIDN'T SHE FOLLOW THROUGH ON HER SUSPICION? THAT WOULD HAVE SAVED HER AND OTHERS A LOT OF TIME AND TROUBLE. (I REALIZE THAT IF SHE DID, THERE WOULD BE NO MOVIE) IF I WERE IN HER PLACE, I WOULD HAVE.

reply

Because the hospital nurses told her she was mistaken. They looked at the ID bracelet on the mother and the baby's ankle bracelet, and they matched. Also, this happened in 1978, when most women were still drugged throughout their deliveries - the nurses probably assumed that she'd been out of it during her delivery.
Nowadays, when new moms have suspicions like this, they are definitely investigated - hospitals do NOT want law suits like the one the Twiggs brought (and won) against the hospital that switched their baby. Also, ID bracelets and ankle bands are fitted much tighter to the baby's skin now; it's supposed to be impossible to get them off without cutting them off.

But in India, differnet gendered babies got switched. I kid you not. Only upon changing did the mistake become appearent.

reply

This was based on a true story you know. If she was listened to, there'd be no movie because there'd have been no real life switch.

reply

She probably didn't pursue it because it's so unlikely that your baby would be switched with another. You'd feel silly pursuing it and just think you'd got it wrong IMO.

Hmmmm puzzler. Bit of a puzzle.
