Such a weird movie...
I had seen this years before, but the implications never fully occurred to me before now. Not only that, but the tone of this movie is so off, it's hard to know whether to take it seriously at all. The murder at the beginning doesn't seem to click with the rest of the film. As a reincarnate, shouldn't Steve have taken that chance to turn his murderers in? And at that point near the end, when Steve's body was discovered, it seems to be treated too lightly. Jimmy Smits's character doesn't even react at all (which makes me wonder whether or not he actually believed Amanda was Steve). And I won't even get started with the whole he/she aspect of it, and why Amanda couldn't get it on with another woman, yet had no problem sharing a child with Walter (as a rape victim, no less). It's just really, really odd.
This movie reminds me a lot of the moral waywardness implied by the ending of Chances Are. It makes me feel conflicted inside, like I'm not really sure whether it's right or wrong, but I think it has more to do with societal standards of morality that has been inflicted upon our culture. I can't really say either is a bad movie, it's just...weird.
