To tie up loose ends to explain the peace treaty with Klingons for the TV franchize.
Kind of like how Enterprise explained why there are Klingons without head ridges.
It was like a blend of the original movies (II onwards) with a sprinkle of foreshadowing for TNG (peace with Klingons, Worf, Kirks final log entry). Whereas Generations was the opposite - a TNG movie with a sprinkle of the original films
