Most odd part of this movie is when Spock asks Bones to help make the special torpedo. The Bird of Prey is tearing the Enterprise apart, shouldn't the Dr. be, you know, doctoring?
Yippee kay yay, Mr. Falcon!
But then you wouldn't have Bones in a critical scene.

...when Shatners ego causes him to steal scenes from other actors. The "special equipment for detecting gaseous anomalies" mentioned by Uhura was supposed to be onboard the Excelsior (which was their mission waaay back at the start of the movie). But Shatner wanted Kirk to have the kill shot instead of Sulu.

If there were going to be any further Captain Sulu movies, it might have been appropriate to have Sulu do it, and hence take on the mantle as Savior Of The Federation. But to be the last movie, then yes it needed to be Kirk. They just should have been less obvious and clunky about it.
