Star Trek... in its PRIME!

After losing the plot somewhat with "Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier", this must be celebrated as nothing but a magnificent return-to-form and indeed triumph for the series and franchise. Great plotting, scripting, performing and execution are undeniably on view all round here. A top-notch entry in the series, a quality farewell (for some) to the original cast/storyline and great entertainment value are all undisputedly offered with this film. It's a great, great movie in a great series! Hats-off and much-love to "The Undiscovered Country"!

It's got more than a few dodgy attempts at humor that knock it down a couple of notches. But its a decent film.

"dodgy attempts at humour" aside... a very FINE entry!!

My dad saw TOS when it originally aired. I grew up watching it in reruns. When we saw this in the theater, we both loved it. When Martia kissed Kirk, I said, "Nice throwback to the series." My dad smiled and nodded in agreement. Miss him every day. RIP dad.

Nice story. My dad and I used to watch TOS together too.

Agreed. This was an excellent movie, not just an excellent Star Trek movie. Its plot was particularly timely, envisioned as a parallel to thawing US/Soviet relations at the time. And its messages and quotations remain equally applicable to the present day. Many of them voiced by Chancellor Gorkon; the seemingly simple "Well... I see we have a long way to go", recognizing that formally making peace is easy, while actually changing people's attitudes sufficiently to maintain that peace and enable it to flourish over the long term is the tricky part. A few other favourites:

"On Vulcan we have a saying: 'Only Nixon can go to China.'"

"To be, or not to be. That is the question that preoccupies our people, Captain Kirk. We need breathing room!"
"Earth. Hitler. 1938."

"You don't trust me, do you? I don't blame you. If there is to be a brave new world, our generation will have the hardest time living in it."

To be fair, TUC is an episode worthy story. Just not sure it was TOS finale film worthy. The Enterprise (and another Federation ship) in a life or death struggle with...a Bird of Prey? Eh.

For that matter, why weren't there lots of Federation, Klingon and Romulan ships orbiting Khitomer?

Maybe they were kept away both to preserve secrecy, and to avoid temptation. On EITHER side.
