Never understood this. When chang fires on the enterprise from right in front of it kirk says "back off back off"and the enterprise reverses, chang asks why. I dont get this, seems normal what anyone would do by backing off.

To "reverse" in space implies a reference point. Backing up away from something that Chang thought couldn't be detected made him wonder how they knew where he was.
