Location, location, location...

Despite what critics have pointed out over the years about the historical accuracy (or inaccuracies), I think one of Morning Star's greatest strengths are the locales where it was filmed. I've probably seen every film made on Custer's Last Stand since I was a kid, and this miniseries is the best depiction of what the actual terrain looked like, and how the battle truly appeared (as an earlier poster said, disorganized and chaotic). One film that makes me cringe the most is Custer of the West, which had the last stand take place among a circle of boulders (filmed in Spain). The producers of Son of the Morning Star took steps to make it right by filming in the same area of Montana where the battle took place.

I agree with everything you said. It was VERY accurate, even if a few critics found ways to nit-pick tiny details. In reality, it is very hard to have an entire movie 100% accurate, and besides, what one person calls accurate will always differ from another.

I just saw Custer of the West and couldn't agree more about the final battle scene which was ridiculous. Actually the movie was just too much about spectacular wide screen bravado mostly tho' the bit about the jogging around the parade ground was brilliant if fanciful. I hope to see Son of the Morning Star shortly and I don't know anything of how they chose the name but just finished the chapter on the Battle at *beep* in Custers book and he mentions when they were about to attack, waiting for first light, they were amazed at the appearence of the morning star.
