When Laura is digging the clams, and Martin walks up to her, they talk. Then she realizes she got a little sand on him, and he says something like, "I have time to change".

She looks at him, to me her look is sad as he is walking away.

Was she actually wishing he could "change" and be a better person/husband?

Yes. It showed the audience how much she loved him, and part of her still does.

Its common with abusive relationships. The person remembers what their spouse was like when they first met and/or married, and when they show kindness....they wish they'd stay that way.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
