It takes a long time to be that controlling and once you are, your partner will let you get away with almost anything. Then something in your mind snaps and you make the decision to leave. Some get up in the morning and go and some, like Laura, have to plan it.

Police are generally useless in domestic violence cases, especially if the abuser is a cop, lawyer, or otherwise known to and friendly with them. In those cases, they're worse than useless, they frequently collaborate with the abusers and cover up what they've done.

The biggest reason why women don't leave abusive men immediately is because most women who are murdered by abusive men are murdered right after leaving them so unless you have a place to hide, leaving is very dangerous.

You aren't in a abusive relationship or abusive parents?, that's cool, lucky for You then...well You Love Them, Can't help it, especially when you been through a lot together and tight bond, then there is the Manipulation, there is guilt because your messed up loved one makes you feel guilt or sorry for them, so You forgive. Slowly time passes and it just gets worse, the violence gets worse.....

Yes I was dumb but still Young and didn't think I would escape, I was told with the salary I make I can't support myself...in summer 2012 I escaped with injuries and broken bones during a violent assault, I became Homeless for a week...because that is the risk you take, I struggled to find a woman's refuge because they think my injuries are risky, I finally found a refuge, got my old job back, had to buy all my clothes back...everything all over and it cost me lots of money. I even end up in debt, and got myself out of it ..after a few crazy landlords/ landlady's ...finally settled in a place for two years.

Now I work from home, my Boyfriend is my Family, I don't want to see my Mother, her Boyfriend, and the rest of them ever again.

As a Woman, I may be stunted and stupid over 3 years ago, and no matter how hard I try to please and be a "moulded" actress - doesn't stop the evil abuse, but NOW I never looked back, I left with very little but gained more than I lost out of these hard knocks and tough lessons of strength, independence and life experience.

Yes I am happier and goofier because I am feeling myself being myself, being individual. The Greatest Freedom.

Martin was surely nice to her beforehand (although there had to be SOME red flags, surely non-physical ones, that he was a psycho and/or controlling).

I've experienced it briefly twice, and there are always signs. But we tend to ignore them because who wants to believe someone we care for is evil?

But once Laura married Martin, she was screwed. Cops, especially back in 1990, didn't do much. A wife is viewed as property even by society in some ways!

And even if Martin was arrested, he'd not serve much time...AND he is a multimillionaire. Laura knew well that Martin would use every dime he had to find her....and as we see....he did.
